December 27, 1873 KILLED.-A most and [sic] occurrence took place in this town on Christmas Eve, at about 8 o'clock, which resulted in the instant death of Mr. John P. Duffy, a painter, at the hands of a young man named Adrien Breaux, of this Parish. The particulars, as we learn them, are as follows: A number of persons were in Mr. Hebert's coffee house, amusing themselves, when a difficulty arose between Breaux and Duffy, which was soon quieted by those present; nothing more was then thought of the little difficulty until the report of a pistol was heard on the sidewalk and Duffy falling a corpse near the door; the fatal shot taking effect under the left eye and penetrating the brain. Breaux made his escape and has not been arrested up to the time of going to press; the officers of the law are in pursuit of him.
