(Vermilionville [i.e. Lafayette], Attakapas, La.) 1872-1883, April 09, 1873, English, page 2 Commitied [sic] Suicide. - Last Saturday, the 5th inst., at 9 o'clock in the morning, Mr. Treville Duhon, of this parish, committed suicide, by shooting himself, at his residence, about seven miles about southeast of town. It appears, from particulars obtained by us in the vicinity, that Mr. Duhon has for several years past been laboring under a mental affliction, for every spring he has told his wife that he never expected to see another spring. As he was in perfect physical health, he must have either contemplated self destruction for a long time, or a morbid state of mind produced a belief that he was soon to die. We believe this state of mind was known only to his wife, and when, a few evenings before the fatal deed was committed, she found a rasor [sic] under his pillow, her worst apprehensions were fully arroused [sic]. She removed it, without saying a word to any one. Soon afterward, she found a loaded pistol under her pillow - an unusual thing. She asked him about it and he told her he put it there. This she removed, but still said nothing to any other person, perhaps not wishing to expose his weakness. This was unfortunate, as friends might have diverted and restored his mind, and prevented the deed he contemplated. Finally, on Saturday morning, while he was alone in his room, a pistol shot was heard by other members of his family, and on rushing to the spot, they found that he had lain down on the bed, placed the pistol to his right temple, fired, and the ball passed through and lodged near the left eye, causing almost instant death. Mr. Duhon was highly respected by all his neighbors, and leaves his wife and ten children to mourn his untimely end. Deceased was about 47 years of age, and a native of this parish, where he has large family relations.
