G. C. Mills, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana

    G. C. Mills, a prosperous planter of Irene, East Baton Rouge parish,
La., was born in the parish of La Fourche, La., in 1837, and is a son of
John Mills.  The father was born in Bayou Sara, La., in 1797, and died
in 1839.  The mother, whose maiden name was Lilley, was also a native of
Louisiana; she died in 1870, having reared a family of eleven children.
The subject of this notice spent his school days in La Fourche parish
and in the city of Baton Rouge, where he enjoyed superior advantages.
He was reared to the occupation of a farmer, and has followed planting
the most of his life.  In 1865 be was united in marriage to Miss Susan
E. Young, a daughter of the late Robert Young, of Louisiana. Six
children were born to them--two sons and four daughters. In 1862, when
there was a call for men t
o go out in defense of the South, he enlisted
as second lieutenant under Gen. Fred N. Ogden, and was promoted to a
captaincy in 1863.  He took part in the battle of Baton Rouge, the
battle of Harrisburg, Miss., and several skirmishes and minor
engagements.  He was at Gainesville, Ala., at the time of the surrender.
He was never wounded nor taken prisoner, and so escaped the greatest
horrors of warfare.  Mr. Mills now lives on the home place which
contains 900 acres.  He also has a part interest in lands aggregating
2,200 acres.  His brother, Dr. T. L. Mills, being the other partner.  He
raises a large crop of cotton annually.  He is vice-president of the
Farmers' alliance, No. 10, and takes a deep interest in the movements of
this body.  He and his family are consistent members of the Presbyterian
church, and are highly respected in the parish where they reside.
