All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Succession of Nicolas Meuillon Lafourche Parish, Louisiana Succession Year 1833 Know all men by these presents, that I on this seventh twenty eighth day of december [sic] in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three, at ten o'clock in the morning Pursuant to a petition of Jean Baptiste Normand a free man of color of the parish of St. Charles, under tutor of the minor children of the late Nicolas Meuillon, a free man of color of the Interior parish of Lafourche, and pur- suant to a decree of the court of probates siting [sic] in and for the parish last aforesaid, ordaining among other things that a true and faithful inventory of the property left by the said Meuillon deceased, be this day and at this present hour taken by me the subscribing parish Judge I Peter Daspit parish Judge of the In- terior parish of Lafourche, assisted and accompa- nied by Louis Robicho --- a farmer and Henry F. Knoblock, a scrivener, both domiciliated [sic] in the parish last aforesaid and competent witnesses went to the abode of the said Nicolas Meuillon deceased and there we found 1 o Joseph Porche, a free man of colour [sic] of the parish of Assumption, recommended as tutor to the minors Francoise Meuillon, born on the sixteenth june [sic] eighteen hundred and thirteen, Marie Louise Meuillon born on the nineteenth of april [sic] eighteen hundred ans fifteen, Nicolas Meuillon born on the sixth of febraury [sic] eighteen hundred and seventeen, Palmi- ra Meuillon, alias Francoise Marie Therese Meuillon born in or about the year eighteen hundred and nineteen, Auguste Meuillon, alias Emmanuel Meuillon Meuillon, born the twenty fifth of august [sic] eighteen [page crumpled] dred and twenty one, and Marie Therese Meuillon, bo [page crumpled] in or about the year eighteen hundred and twenty [page crumpled] issue of a former marriage between the said Nicolas [page crumpled] Meuillon and the late Melanie alias Francoise Ailla [page crumpled] and the said minors being entitled each of them to [page crumpled] sixth of the estates of their said father & mother deces [page crumpled] 2 o The said Jean Baptiste Normand under tutor of th [page crumpled] said minors 3 o Genevieve Trope a free woman of color, second & survi ving wife of the said Meuillon deceased, she the said Genevieve Trope being entitled to her individual pro perty and to one half of the acquests [sic] & gains of the community lately existing between her and the sai [page crumpled] Meuillon deceased And for the preservation of the rights of the pa [page crumpled] ties and all others whom it does or may concern, I am now going to proceed to take the said inventory, in the places hereinafter described, being parts of the plantatio [page crumpled] lately occupied by the said Nicolas Meuillon on which he died on the nineteenth of October ei [page torn] hundred and thirty three. A lot of old iron, appraised at four bits .50 9. Two picket coulters, appraised at one dollar & a half 1.50 10. A lot of gear (Catcuts ferris) appraised at two dollars & a half 2.50 11. Two cross cut saws, appraised at five dollars 5.o- 12. A harrow (horse) wheels, & gear (Cat cut) ap- praised at two dollars 2.o- 13. A horse cart appraised at six dollars 6.o- 14. Two ploughs one of which is a creole, appraised at two dollars 2.o- 15. Two American ploughs, appraised at two dollars 2.o- 16. A Flooke, appraised at four bits .50 On the galery we found 17. A daggar, a powder horn, a hunting bag & a pair of shoes, appraised at two dollars & a half 2.50 25. A double barrelled gun, appraised at ten dol- lars 10.o- 26. A percussion gun, and a gun without lock, ap- praised at ten dollars 10.o- 27. A cherry armoir, appraised at eighteen dollars 18.o- 28. A bedstead, a counter pane, a blanket, a straw bed, feather bed, mattrass [sic], sheet, a bolster, two pillows, and muschetto [sic] net, appraised at twenty dollars 20.o- 29. Eleven cups & ten saucers, a silver spoon & a silver fork appraised at three dollars 3.o- 30. Five Windsor chairs, appraised at two dollars & a half 2.o- [sic] 31. Two iron pots, a cover & a frying pan, apprai- sed at four dollars 4.o- In the yard we found 32. A heifer, appraised at eight dollars 8.o- 33. A negro boy named Honore aged about sixteen years, appraised at six hundred dollars 600.o- 34. A tract of land measuring two arpents more or less front by forty aprents in depth ______ Amount carried over 734.25 Amount brought over 734. [page torn] situate in the said parish, on the right bank of bayou Lafourche at about fifteen miles below Thibodauxville, bounded above by The lands of Alexis Folse junior, below by those of Madame d'Apremont, appraised at two hundred and fifty dollars. 250.o- Amount of appraisement $ 984.25 Nine hundred and eighty four dollars & two bits Active debts A note of Valsain Rodri, for fifteen dollars, payable in march [sic] next, marked & paraphed number one 15.o- Divers papers A bundle of divers titles, containing among others a sheriff's sale to the above described tract of land, seve- ral emancipations, &c &c A bundle of certificates of baptisun [sic] A bundle of sundry receipts. And nothing remaining to be comprised on his we closed the same inventory v at three o'clock in the afternoon, its aggre- gate amount being nine hundred and ninety nine dollars & twenty five cents, errors excepted The property above described remaining in the possession of the said Genevieve Troppe until dis- posed of accoding to law. Knoblock Daspit Judge Know all men by these presents, that on sat- turday morning the first day of february [sic] in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hun- dred and thirty four, at ten o'clock Pursuant to a decree of the Court of Pro- bates, sitting in and for the Interior parish of Lafourche, rendered upon a petition of Joseph Porche, a free man of colour [sic] of the parish of Assumption, and upon the advice of a family meeting of the minor children of the late Ni- cholas Meuillon, a free man of colour [sic] of the Interior parish of Lafourche, which decree ordains among other things that the property left by the said Meuillon deceased, be this day and at this present hour sold at public auction, by me the subscribing parish judge of the latter parish And pursuant also to public notice given in both languages, during more than thirty days, according to law, by insertions in the Intelligencer, a weekly newspaper printed at Thibodauxville, and by advertisements posted up at the church and court house of the said parish of Lafourche Interior. ---------"--------- I pierre [sic] Daspit Parish Judge of the Interior parish of Lafourche, assisted and accompanied by Louis Robicho ----- and Henry F. Knoblock, competent witnesses went to the abode of the said deceased, right bank of bayou Lafourche, at about fifteen miles below Thibodauxville, and there we found: 1 o The said Joseph Porche tutor of the minor Francoise Meuillon, Marie Louise Meuillon Nicolas Meuillon, Parmira Meuillon alias Fran- coise Marie Therese Meuillon, Auguste Meuillon alias Emanuel Meuillon, and Marie Therese Meuillon, issue of a former marriage between the said Nicholas Meuillon deceased and Inela- ine alias Francoise Ailland; which said minors are entitled each of them to one sixth of the estates of their said father & mother deceased 2 o Jean Baptiste Normand, a free man of colour [sic] of the parish of St. Charles under tutor of the said minors 3 o Genevieve Trope, a free woman of colour [sic], second and surviving wife of the said Meuillon deceased she the said Genevieve being entitled to her in- dividual property and to one half of the ac- quests {sic] and gains of the community lately existing between her and the said Meuillon described. 4 o Mathurin Hotard and Jacques Folse both farmers of the Interior parish of Lafourche who appraised the aforesaid property at the inventory of the same. And after announcing repeatedly and in a loud and audible voice the Terms and conditions of the said sale, which by the said family meeting the said decree and the said notices were fixed as follows: To wit: The tract of land and the slave, payable by thirds, one in all and each of the months of march [sic] of the years eighteen hundred and thirty four, eighteen hundred and thirty five and eighteen hundred and thirty six remaining specially mortgaged until final payment. the other articles payable all sums due by the same purchaser, not exceeding ten dollars, the whole in march [sic] eighteen hun- dred and thirty four, all other sums by halves in march [sic] eighteen hundred and thirty four, & eighteen hundred & thirty five, all purchasers being bound to give approved security.
