Apr 8, 1982 Inez Sako Dead at 71 Inez Falgout Sako, founder of two nursing homes in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, died 3:10 a.m. today in Raceland at the age of 71. "She was a very shrewd businesswoman but even with all of her shrewdness - had a heart as big as Lafourche Parish," said her daughter, Mrs. Robert (Rhea) Dill III, this morning. A native of Gheens and resident of Raceland, Mrs. Sako never lost touch with the people along the bayou that she loved. She and her first husband, Roy J. Rizan operated Rizan's Grocery, across the street from Golden Meadow High School in the early 1930s. In 1947, after the death of her husband, Mrs. Sako continued to run the business alone. But her attentions were still on the small, but growing community. During that time she realized that education was slowly coming to the southern portions of Lafourche Parish so she opened a boarding house about eight apartments for teachers, "because there was no place for them to live." In 1950 she married a pediatrician, Dr. Wallace Sako, a native of Hawaii. They lived in New Orleans for about two years but her roots pulled them back to Lafourche. The family purchased a tract of land in Raceland and in 1953 they built the Sako Clinic for Children. It became the first pediatric hospital in Lafourche Parish. The couple had no children, but with Mrs. Sako, confidently handling the business operations of the hospital, Dr. Sako could devote all of his attention to his young patients. In 1958, Dr. Sako died and Mrs. Sako again looked at her community to see what was needed. It was at this time that she, together with representatives From the state department of hospitals, saw a need for a nursing home to care for elderly persons. "I was afraid at first," she confided in a "Personality of the Week", interview for the Terrebonne, Press in Aug. 17, 1965. But, in 1962 that "fear"' developed into the Inez Sako Nursing Home on Louisiana in Raceland. During its construction was said" that the young woman was often seen "in ankle deep mud, looking over construction details working with electricians, plumbers, architects, and painters. In July 1964, she completed a course in Health Care for the Aged at a Dallas, Texas institute. She also took a pilot course in Nursing Home Administration at George Washington University. She managed the 27-bed nursing home alone for 10 years. And in 1965 was able to establish another 57-bed home on Hollywood Road in Houma. Today the Raceland nursing home has expanded to 87-beds and the Houma location an astounding 105. The growth of the two operations-drove Mrs. Sako to seek the help of her son- in-law, Robert Dill III, who became the administrator. Yet from the days when she provided low-cost housing to young people, "until they got on their feet to her retirement eight years ago, Mrs. Sako remained actively involved in business. Most recently she developed the Shady Park Mobile Home lot and the Sako Apartment Complex in Raceland. She once said, "When I rest at night, I am gratified beca use I feel I have done something to serve humanity." That sentiment seems to have been the theme of her life. Visitation for Mrs. Sako will be 9 a.m. until funeral time Saturday at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Mathews. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Holy Savior Cemetery in Lockport. Survivors include, two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rhea) Dill III and Mrs. Dolly Terrebonne; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Pitre, Mrs. Elmire Louvier, and Mrs. Alida Alario; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Clyde LeBlanc: died Saturday at age 73 Writer-artist Clyde LeBlanc Dead at 73 L. Clyde LeBlanc, a noted local writer and artist died Saturday at the age of 73. LeBlanc's achievements also included singing and working with the LePetit Theatre de Terrebonne in many of it's productions throughout the years. During those years he performed, directed, managed and designed sets and reached a point where members of the theater company called him the 'driving force' behind the group. As an artist, his works depicted the Louisiana Cajun Country and its people and many of his renderings can be seen in area homes. During the Bicentennial of 1976, he supervised the production and drew the cartoons for the "Good Earth Cookbook," a work compiling many old Cajun recipes. Profits from the sales of that book went to his favorite endeavor; the restoration of the Southdown Museum. He also published "The Nobell Lettres," a book of Cajun humor and funny stories again writing it and drawing the illustrations himself. Besides his artistic endeavors, LeBlanc was also a prominent local businessman, having operated a bakery, a plumbing and heating supply company and a mechanical contracting and engineering company. In 1957, through self-study, he earned his Professional Engineer's license by taking a two-day examination and then in 1961, while a member of the Plumbing Board, he was examined and licensed as a Journeyman Plumber. After years of faithful service to Terrebonne Parish through his business life and his artistic endeavors, LeBlanc was named the Terrebonne Parish Most Useful Citizen by the Houma Courier in 1972.
