Jul 21, 1982 Ruth Patterson Mrs. Ruth Ellen Elizabeth Carlson Patterson, 79, died 5:30 a.m. today at her home on Little Bayou Black Drive. She was the wife of Charles Ray Patterson, who started Patterson Truck Line. Mrs. Patterson was a native of Fort Worth, Texas and would have been 80 years old on July 27. She was active in the First United Methodist Church for many years, said Rev. John Winn. "She was one of the matriarchs of the church." She was the organist for many years and was a member of the board of the church, as well as serving in numerous leadership roles, Winn said. "With her husband they were leaders in the move that relocated the church from the old red brick church at the corner of School and Goode to its present location on Little Bayou Black Drive," he said. Her Sunday school class honored her family some years ago by naming itself the "Patterson Class," he added. Many Houmans knew Mrs. Patterson's house as the Christmas House on Little Bayou Black, said friend and associate Harold Bauland. Since about 1952, Mrs. Patterson adorned her house with lights and Christmas decorations, Bauland said. Bauland also said Mrs. Patterson was active in church activities; contributing financially to Centenary College near Shreveport and its choir. She also helped Centenary and Houma college students pay their tuition costs. Mrs. Patterson was also a successful businesswoman. When C.R. Patterson died in 1952, she took over the business with her only son, Charles, said Bauland. From Patterson Truck Line, the business expanded with Patterson Inspection Services and Patterson Services. C.R. Patterson was the Houma Courier's Most Useful Citizen in 1948. She is survived by one brother, George Carlson, and one son, Charles Patterson, and five grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ellen Marie Johnson Carlson and Edward Carlson. Visitation will begin 7 p.m. today until 10 p.m. at the Chauvin Funeral Home and resume 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the above named church.
