Constant Funeral services have been scheduled Tuesday for Nelson John Constant, Bayou Boeuf businessman and civic leader of the Ward 6 community, who died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday. He was 93. Constant served Bayou Boeuf as a businessman, fish dealer, fur buyer, grocer, banker, doctor, postmaster, educator, civic and religious leader. Operating a general merchandise business with his father, Constant provided an economic base for the community through logging, fishing, trapping, moss picking, frogging and other activities and provided the capital to allow members of the community to engage in their occupations. In emergencies with no doctor available, Constant served in that capacity, occasionally sewing cuts, setting broken limbs and providing assorted assistance. For many years before he officially became postmaster, he brought the mail from out lying post offices and distributed it in his store. As a young man, he organized baseball teams which competed one of the first students of Bayou Boeuf to finish high school, being graduated from the Guion Academy. He also was a graduate in business from Jefferson College in Convent. He is survived by his second wife, Hyacinth Bergeron of Houma. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Georigana Viosca. He is also survived by two children Mrs. Leon (Denise) Borne Sr., Mrs. Warren (Jeanne) Michot, Nelson Victor Constant, Lloyd Constant, Kenneth Constant and an adopted son Nelson J. Constant Jr. He was preceded in death two children, Mrs. Georgiana Kraemer and Reid Constant. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.
