Abel Caillouet, 84, auxiliary bishop of the New Orleans Archdiocese for 36 years, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, New Orleans, after a long illness. Bishop Caillouet, a native of Thibodaux served as auxiliary bishop of New Orleans from 1947 and 1975. He also served as an Administrator of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, a pastor of Souls at St. Joseph Church, Baton Rouge, and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, New Orleans during this time. Before he was selected as auxiliary bishop, he served as a priest of the New Orleans Archdiocese. Since his retirement in August 1975, Bishop Caillouet resided at Ursuline Convent in New Orleans serving as Director of Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Bishop Caillouet's first assignment as a young priest was a temporary replacement at St. John Baptist Church, Brusly, from August to November 1925. In November 1925, he became the assistant priest at St. Joseph Church, Baton Rouge and remained there for 10 years. He served as administrator and the pastor of Our Lady of Perpertual Help Church, Kenner, in 1935. He was also the pastor of St. Eloi's Church, Theriot, until he was named pastor of St. Joseph Church, where he served until 1951. He then became pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in New Orleans.
