Submitted by: Chris Tidwell Services Saturday for Houma businessman [Carrol John Matherne] Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Christian Fellowship church in Houma for Carrol John Matherne, a noted Houma businessman, rancher, landowner and philanthropist. Matherne 49, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday in Terrebonne General Hospital after complications arising from heart disease. He was being admitted to the hospital on Saturday. Matherne had suffered a massive heart attack in 1975 and has since undergone Open Heart surgery on two occasions. Although his schooling included only five grades as a student in Schriever, Matherne was a leading figure in Terrebonne Parish for much of his life. Matherne dedicated himself to a wide variety of activities and interests. He was a noted philanthropist, his two favorite charitable being area churches and retarded children's organizations. Matherne was also an inventor and holder of six patents. In a life that he constantly strived to fill with challenges, Matherne was also a rodeo hand, diver, and a raiser of cattle and horses. Although highly successful, Matherne prided himself on trying to lead the life of the common man. Matherne was born in Bourg July 16, 1935. His father was a trapper, and as a youngster, Matherne trapped too. Matherne began his career as a derrick worker and driller and once worked for six months on an Oil Rig in Venice 20 hours a day a day off. Matherne later got a Tool pushing job and went into the casing and rig building business. In time, his business expanded to include drilling rigs and work over equipment in addition to well testing and rental tubes. Matherne's first business was Cajun Casing Crews, located in Venice, which he later developed into Statco Inc. Matherne was also a successful investor in cattle and horses, and owned about 10,000 acres of land in Terrebonne Parish. At one time Matherne, owned two horse farms in Kentucky, and about 12 years ago he entered a horse, Crimson Ruler, in the Kentucky Derby. In October, Matherne donated $2.7 million in ownership shares of thoroughbred horses in Kentucky, New York and Louisiana to the Nicholls State University Foundation. In making the donation, Matherne said that he wanted to help the Nicholls farm, the university and the students. In 1982 State Sen. Leonard Chabert, his wife and son Marty Chabert, purchased Matherne's Statco oilfield service company for $8 million. Since then, Chabert had filed Chaper 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Orleans, and Matherne is listed as a major creditor in the proceedings. Visitation began Thursday at Matherne's residence at 2701 W. Main St. in Houma and will continue until funeral time Saturday. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery No. 2 in Houma. He was the husband of Remedia Trosclair Matherne; father of Pamela E. Matherne, and Remedia "Sissy" Moore; son of Allie Dupre Matherne of Houma: and the brother of Mrs. Walter (Irene) Pitre, Mrs. Liley (Gertrude) Porche Jr. and Augustin Matherne, all of Houma.
