Diket Nicholls State University history professor emeritus Dr. Albert L. Diket died Sunday after a lengthy illness. He was 76. Diket joined the Nicholls faculty in 1968. He taught history there until his retirement in May 1982. He was a native of Algiers and had lived in Thibodaux for the past 20 years. Diket received degrees from Tulane, The University of Oregon and Louisiana State University. He was the author of several books. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Sigma Iota and Phi Alpha Theta Honorary fraternities. He was first president and co-founder of the New Orleans Jazz Club. Diket was active with community theaters, acting in play at LaPetite Theatre in New Orleans, the Thibodaux Playhouse and the East Carolina University Players. He is survived by his wife, Babette Gluckman Diket; daughter, Susan D. Clark; sons, Christopher, Jeffrey and Dr. Albert Diket Jr.; and sister Beryl Uhl. He is also survived by two grandchildren. Herman Washington, 48, died upon arriving at Thibodaux General Hospital. The Thibodaux Police Department received a call concerning Washington at 8:51 a.m. Attendants from Acadian Ambulance Service found Washington at his residence with his heart still beating, police reported, He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Washington was found by his wife after not reporting to work today as a teacher at East Thibodaux Jr. High School, according to the police report. He was also a candidate for the Lafourche Parish Council from District 3 and ran unsuccessfully for an at-large seat on the Thibodaux City Council in 1986. A native of Thibodaux, Washington was married to Theodora Washington and was the father of four children. He was the son of Enola Washington, a former teacher and principal in the Lafourche Parish School System.
