Landry's Funeral Home, Thibodaux, is in charge of the arrangements. ============================ December 1, 1987 Wauban Labatories founder dead at 88 Dr. Thomas Powell Jr. Dr. Thomas Edward Powell Jr., founder of Wauhun laboratories, died Tuesday in Burlington, N.C. Powell, 88, a native of Warrenton, N.C. and a resident of Burlington, founded Waubun laboratories, located in Schreiver, in 1945 In 1970. Rana Laboratories, a division of Waubun, was opened in Brownsville, Tex. Powell, a graduate of Elon College in Burlington, earned his Ph.D. from Duke University in Biology in 1930. He received an honorary doctor of science degree from Elon in 1968 and the same title from Duke in May of this year. Powell directed his research toward the life history and control of the tobacco beetle. The Carolina Biological Supply Company was founded by Powell in 1927 and he headed operation of the company on a full-time basis since 1936. The company has offices in Gladstone, Ore., Jonesport, Me., Warrenton and Burlington, N.C. Powell was given the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Military Institute. This is the highest award given by the school and Powell was the second non-alumnus to receive the honor. He was a life member of the Parents Council at VMI and served on the Board of Directors for the VMI Research Institute from 1963 to 1969. Powell was an instructor of biology and geology at Elon College from 1919 to 1936. He was on active duty in the U.S. Army during World War I and joined the Army Reserve after the war. Powell resigned his commission in the army reserve in 1935. Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Front Street United Methodist Church and interment was in Magnolia Cemetery, Elon College, N.C. He is survived by his second wife, Annabelle Council Powell; daughters, Mrs. Sophia Wolfe, Odenton. Md., and Annabelle "Beth" Powell Guy, Burlington; sons, Joseph Powell, Sanger, Tex., Thomas III, John, James, William and Samuel Powell, Burlington; and sister, Caroline E. Powell, Elon College. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home. ======================================================================== December 3, 1987 Funeral set for Mrs. Silverberg Mary Elizabeth Mayer Silverberg, wife of the late Joe Silverberg, a former publisher of the Daily Comet, died at 4:30 this morning. She was 69. A native of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Silverberg moved to Thibodaux in 1946 when her husband and a partner Edward R. Jackson of Thibodaux bought what was then the Lafourche Comet. She was active in numerous civic and school-related activities in Thibodaux. A graduate of Louisiana State University in library science, Mrs. Silverberg established the agricultural economics library at LSU prior to the start of World War II. She continued her library work in Thibodaux on a volunteer basis, overseeing the operations of the library at Thibodaux General Hospital. She was a member of the Houma Duplicate Bridge Club and reached the level of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. She was preceded in death by her parents Beatrice Mayer and Buffington S. Mayer of Baton Rouge as well as her husband. She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Winston (Jane) Ardoin of Eunice; sons John of Las Vegas, Nev., James of Thibodaux, Jay of Petaluma, Calif., and Joel of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother Buffington S. Mayer Jr. of Baton Rouge; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Thibodaux Funeral Home in Thibodaux. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel.
