Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Theresa of Avila 
Catholic Church, Gonzales, for L.V. Achord, 74, a native and resident of 
Gonzales, who died Tuesday.

Visitation is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 
9:45 a.m. Friday at Welsh Funeral Home, Gonzales.

He was the father of James "Jimmy" Achord, Mrs. Gerald (Rose Mary) Babin, 
Gonzales, and Mrs. Roland (Vera) Melancon, Sorrento; and brother of Leola 
Ledet, Thibodaux, Ruth Porrier and Margaret LeBlanc, Gonzales. He is also 
survived by 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche "Diddie" Bercegeay Achord; 
parents, Lorwin V. and Charlie Suydan Achord; son, David Achord; one grandson; 
eight brothers; and four sisters.

Home Chapel in Thibodaux for Paul E. Adams, 58, a native of Chackbay and 
resident of Thibodaux, who died Tuesday.

Visitation is today from 5-10 p.m. and from 8 a.m. until funeral time at 
Thibodaux Funeral Home. Interment is in St. Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux.

He was the husband of Lucille Eschete Adams; father of Dianna, Paul Phillip, 
Jerry, James and Leroy Adams; stepfather of Brenda Foret and Barbara Oncale; 
and brother of Rose Gilfour, Valerie Tabor, Joe, Ernest, and Anthony Adams.  He 
is also survived by 10 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren one great-
grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Leona Oncale Adams; 
brothers, Gilbert and John Adams; and sisters, Matile Gilfour and Marie 
Allemand.

She was the mother of Jerry Boudreaux; and sister of John Doiron and Ouida 
Voelkel. She is also survived by three grandchildren and four great-

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurd Joseph Boudreaux; son, Donald 
Boudreaux; daughter, Myra Boudreaux O'Dowd; parents, Furcie and Eugenie Montet 
Doiron; brother, Percy Doiron; and sisters, Gertrude Sanchey and Jane Eskine.

Church for Tillman Burdis, 53, a native and resident of Labadieville, who died

service is be Monday at 10 a.m. Interment is in the church cemetery.

He was the son of Beulah Burdis. He was also survived by nine brothers, 
Medrick, Alton, Lloyd, Richard, Larry, Lionel, Oscar Jr., Gibson, Leroy and 
Ricky Burdis and by three sisters, Udell, Dorothy and Carol Burdis.

He was preceded in death by his, father Oscar Burdis Sr.

Wauban Labatories founder dead at 88

Dr. Thomas Powell Jr.

Dr. Thomas Edward Powell Jr., founder of Wauhun laboratories, died Tuesday in 
Burlington, N.C.

Powell, 88, a native of Warrenton, N.C. and a resident of Burlington, founded 
Waubun laboratories, located in Schreiver, in 1945 In 1970. Rana Laboratories, 
a division of Waubun, was opened in Brownsville, Tex.

Powell, a graduate of Elon College in Burlington, earned his Ph.D. from Duke 
University in Biology in 1930.  He received an honorary doctor of science 
degree from Elon in 1968 and the same title from Duke in May of this year. 
Powell directed his research toward the life history and control of the tobacco 
beetle.

The Carolina Biological Supply Company was founded by Powell in 1927 and he 
headed operation of the company on a full-time basis since 1936.  The company 
has offices in Gladstone, Ore., Jonesport, Me., Warrenton and Burlington, N.C.

Powell was given the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Military 
Institute. This is the highest award given by the school and Powell was the 
second non-alumnus to receive the honor. He was a life member of the Parents 
Council at VMI and served on the Board of Directors for the VMI Research 
Institute from 1963 to 1969.

Powell was an instructor of biology and geology at Elon College from 1919 to 
1936. He was on active duty in the U.S. Army during World War I and joined the 
Army Reserve after the war. Powell resigned his commission in the army reserve 
in 1935.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Front Street United Methodist 
Church and interment was in Magnolia Cemetery, Elon College, N.C.

He is survived by his second wife, Annabelle Council Powell; daughters, Mrs. 
Sophia Wolfe, Odenton. Md., and Annabelle "Beth" Powell Guy, Burlington; sons, 
Joseph Powell, Sanger, Tex., Thomas III, John, James, William and Samuel 
Powell, Burlington; and sister, Caroline E. Powell, Elon College.

He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sophia Maude Sharpe Powell; and 
parents, Thomas Edward and Clara Morton Bobbitt Powell.

for Mary Boyer Senner, 80, a native of Thibodaux and a resident of Algiers, who

the stepmother of Mrs. Irvin (Lori Ann) Pierce, Mrs. Lawrence (Betty) Loupe, Mrs. 
Donald (Pam) Falgout, Norris and Michael Martin. She was also survived by seven 
brothers, Edwin, Nobby, Louis, Harry, Freddie, Raymond and Thomas Andras; one 
sister, Mrs. Walter Rodrigue; 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Anatole Hebert and two brothers, Norman 
and Junias Andras.

Funeral set for Mrs. Silverberg

Mary Elizabeth Mayer Silverberg, wife of the late Joe Silverberg, a former 
publisher of the Daily Comet, died at 4:30 this morning. She was 69.

A native of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Silverberg moved to Thibodaux in 1946 when her 
husband and a partner Edward R. Jackson of Thibodaux bought what was then the 
Lafourche Comet. She was active in numerous civic and school-related activities 
in Thibodaux.

A graduate of Louisiana State University in library science, Mrs. Silverberg 
established the agricultural economics library at LSU prior to the start of 
World War II. She continued her library work in Thibodaux on a volunteer basis, 
overseeing the operations of the library at Thibodaux General Hospital.

She was a member of the Houma Duplicate Bridge Club and reached the level of 
Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.

She was preceded in death by her parents Beatrice Mayer and Buffington S. Mayer 
of Baton Rouge as well as her husband. She is survived by a daughter Mrs. 
Winston (Jane) Ardoin of Eunice; sons John of Las Vegas, Nev., James of 
Thibodaux, Jay of Petaluma, Calif., and Joel of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother 
Buffington S. Mayer Jr. of Baton Rouge; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Thibodaux Funeral Home in 
Thibodaux. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will 
be in St. John's Episcopal Cemetery in Thibodaux.

Memorial donations to the Thibodaux Chapter Friends of the Library P.O. Box

grandchildren.

grandchild.

Dr. Joe Gray Taylor

Memorial services for Dr. Joe Gray Taylor, 67, of Lake Charles, a former member 
of the Nicholls State history faculty, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at 
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Lake Charles.  He died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday 
in Lake Charles hospital after an illness of several months.

He taught history at Nicholls from 1950-53 and again from 1958-63. He was active 
at the time in the First Presbyterian Church of Thibodaux. In 1963 he joined the 
faculty at McNeese State University. He became dean of the College of Liberal 
Arts in 1983, a post he held until his death. He was the author of many books 
and articles, including "Louisiana, A Bicentennial History" and "Negro Slavery in 
Louisiana."

His survivors include his wife, the former Helen Eva Friday; two sons, Joe Gray 
Jr. of Saudi Arabia and Edward Coleman of Lake Charles; and one daughter, 
Harriette Scott of Champagne, Ill.

Contributions may be made to the Joe Gray Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund, in

He was the father of Steve Allen of Paincourtville and George Allen of Denham 
Springs; and brother of Mrs. Robert (Mary Lou) Lovett, Mrs. Ralph (Lela) Calmes, 
Mrs. Henry (Julia) Whitehead, Harvey, Louis, Tullie, Carl and Robert Allen Jr. 
He is also survived by three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Florence Chambers Allen.

He taught in Lafourche Parish schools in 1947.
