Louis Streams Jr., chairman of the Thibodaux Housing Authority Board, are scheduled at 8 p.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Thibodaux Streams, 74, a native and resident of Thibodaux, died Wednesday. Visitation is scheduled 5-8 p.m. Monday at the church. Dismissal services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Streams, was an active member in the Thibodaux community, having served as an educator and minister. He left the community for a few years after he finished the seventh grade because during, that time there was no high school available to blacks in the city. Leaving behind his parents, brothers and sisters, Streams traveled to New Orleans where he attended and graduated from McDonogh No. 35 High School in 1937, and received a bachelor's degree from Xavier University in 1941. He also received a master's degree from the University of Southern California, attended Louisiana State University and Nicholls State University. He, began teaching at the newly opened Corporation School located on Narrow Street, the only high school for blacks in 1941. He stayed at the Corporation School, which later became C.M. Washington High School, for seven years but his stay was interrupted by a three-year stint in the United State Army. Before he was discharged in 1946, Streams served in the European Theater, in the war against the Germans, the Pacific Theater against the Japanese and finally the army occupation in Korea. Streams left the Corporation School to become a principal at Greenwood Middle School in Terrebonne Parish. He served that school for 22 years. He was the only principal in that parish to keep his job after integration. He became an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church in 1952. He served at Mount Vernon United Methodist, Walmsley United Methodist, Mason United Methodist, Trinty United Methodist, Winan United Methodist, Calvary United Methodist and Magnolia United Methodist. He was an active member of St. JosephÕs Lodge No. 15, Rosa Sharon Chapter 24 Royal Arch, John Parson Consistory No. 170 32nd degree Mason, Supreme Council 33rd degree Mason, Rebecca Chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars No. 23, the Lafourche Parish Branch of the National Associations for the Advancement of Colored People and the Thibodaux Housing Authority Board.
