Leonard Chabert, a member of the Louisiana Legislature for more than 20 years, died Thursday night at his home after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 58. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Cut Off, followed by interment in the church cemetery. A wake will be from 3-10 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chauvin. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the funeral at Sacred Heart Church. Chabert decided in August not to seek re-election to the senate because of his illness. "I have battled cancer for the last three years," he said in August. "I had hoped that after seeking treatment from three of the finest medical facilities in the country that by now I could be fully recovered and be able to give my total energy to continuing to serve as senator. That is not the case." Chabert died at his home at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, said Marty Chabert, one of his three sons. The Senate's president pro tern, Chabert was active through the 1991 session in spite of his three-year fight against cancer. He had been confined to bed for the past several months, the younger Chabert said. "He was particularly proud of fighting for the poor and the elderly," Marty Chabert said. Among other things, he said Chabert also championed the South Louisiana Medical Center in Houma, whose management operations served as a mode! for the state's charity hospital system, Lockport Mayor Al Robichaux will serve as one of the pallbearers at Chabert's funeral. "He was a good friend to me and especially to the elderly and people in need. He will be very missed in; the halls of Baton Rouge." Rep.
