"Boone" Tauzin, father of U.S. Rep. Billy Tauzin, was found dead Thursday near his home in Chackbay. Tauzin, 78, was found floating in a canal on his property where he had been working, daughter, Karen Ray said. Tauzin was building a small bridge over the canal and levee to reach a crawfish pond. A piece of lumber apparently catapulted and struck him in the forehead, knocking him into the water, she said. Although he had a heart condition, it is unlikely it caused his death. Tauzin was an electrician by trade but his true interests were in hunting and fishing, Ray said. "He was a true Cajun," she said. "Maybe he shouldn't have been doing what he was doing but it was exactly the way he would have liked to have gone; He was so proud of this thing he was building." Tauzin was found with a brush burn-like injury to his forehead but the exact cause of his death has not been determined, said Detective Paul Lirette of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. An autopsy was scheduled this morning. There were no signs of foul play but the investigation into the death is continuing, he said. Billy Tauzin was notified when he arrived Thursday night in Colorado for an energy seminar, aide Martin Cancienne said. Tauzin intended to fly home today. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Chackbay. Jazz musicians from New Orleans will march in a musical Funeral procession from Simon Bolivar Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard. A time has not been set yet. Many of the players are veteran New Orleans jazz musicians. He will be buried in the Deweyville Cemetery in Houma Monday evening. Lewis' son, Alfred Lewis Jr., said Saturday his father's bond with other New Orleans musicians is legendary and strong. Lewis was a pioneering jazz guitarist who played with Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington, his son said. He was a long-time member of the Preservation Hall house band. Born in Houma in 1904, Lewis moved away when he was young. At one point during his career he was the top musician for mobster Al Capone's famous Three Deuces Club in Chicago. A news article about Lewis from a New Orleans newspaper in the 1970s said his background was so complex it was not clear how many bands he played with or in how many countries he performed and recorded. He studied business in Chicago and became interested in music in the 1920s. He first studied the banjo under professor Jim Humphrey and later with Willie Foster. He played in a number of dance bands in the 1930s, including the last King Oliver bands. When the swing era began, Lewis to keep up switched from the banjo to the guitar. He played with Charlie Christian, Earl Hines and many other jazz greats. ===================== PATRICK THIBODAUX Services are incomplete for Patrick A. Tardo, 61, was serving a 29-year sentence for the attempted assassination Sheriff Duffy Breaux Jr. in a pipe bomb explosion Dec. 15. 1988. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Tardo, a former state trooper, was Lafourche Parish Sheriff from 1972-76, when Breaux replaced him, and parish president from 1984-88. Tardo was the husband of Rosemary Tardo; brother of Nick Tardo, Patsy Theriot and Anita Rome; father of Debra and Michael Tardo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie and Dominic Tardo; and brothers, Lester and Dominic Tardo Jr. Tardo had been a patient at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Mo., since Feb. 28, said Charles Peterson, a spokesman for the prison hospital. Peterson would not discuss Tardo's health before the heart attack, which occurred about 7 a.m. Thursday. He said that because of Tardo's heart condition, his death was not unexpected. Tardo was pronounced dead at 7:42 a.m. Tardo began serving his 29-year sentence in August 1989 at a federal prison in El Reno, Okla. He also served time at Levinworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas and had been hospitalized at Springfield once before. "I don't have any business against him," Breaux said Thursday. "I said from the beginning I thought he had made a mistake." Breaux and Tardo were once good friends and worked together for years in the Sheriff's Office, he said. Breaux was a deputy during Pardo's term as sheriff. "I don't hold any animosities toward him. I don't hold any grudges against him for that. We all make mistakes in life, and he made his. I just want to offer my condolences to his family," Breaux said. "We always were friends. We never were enemies. "What made him do it — I don't know." Tardo, along with three other men charged with bombing Breaux pleaded guilty in federal court on March 22. 1989. Tardo pleaded guilty to soliciting to commit a crime, malicious injury of a person and property and conspiracy to possess an explosive device. Tardo's conspirators Marshall McClendon, John Tuilier Jr. and Ralph Bergeron pleaded guilty to related charges. Breaux was critically injured when a homemade pipe bomb, detonated by remote control, exploded near his car at the Thibodaux Civic Center while Breaux was leaving a senior citizens Christmas party with part-time deputy Daniel "Judge" Leche. The bomb, concealed in a paper bag left near the door of Breaux's car, exploded when the sheriff kicked it. Prosecutors alleged Tardo hired McClendon, who worked for Tardo on a multi- parish drug task force from 1972-74, to murder Breaux. McClendon, Tullier and Bergeron, also a member of the strike force from Houma gathered the materials to build the bomb. Bergeron stalked Breaux to determine his movements, and McClendon and Tullier detonated the bomb, injuring the sheriff. Tardo paid McClendon about $8,000 for the bombing, a $2,000 bonus and was to pay another $12,000 once Breaux was dead, according to court records. Tardo also paid Bergeron an unspecified amount on money in February 1989 to conceal the conspiracy and the people involved and to avoid arrest, according to the charges against Tardo. Tardo paid a police informant $100 to "get out of town" and admitted his involvement in the scheme during a tape recorded telephone conversation. ===================== JOSEPH WAGUESPACK A graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux for Joseph Paul Waguespack, a native and resident of Thibodaux, who died at 1:10 p.m. Thursday.
