Hamilton Mixon, a state police spokesman. Andolsek was a offensive lineman for the National Football League Detroit Lions and had been a standout player at Thibodaux High School and Louisiana State University. The vehicle was a big diesel truck cab with a short flat bed and its driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, Mixon said. The accident is still under investigation. The accident happened about 1 p.m. at Andolsek's home in the St. John community, state police said. Andolsek, 6-foot-2 and 286 pounds was pronounced dead at 1:54 p.m. at Thibodaux Hospital and Health Centers, about a half-hour after he was brought in by ambulance, said Toni Martinez, a hospital spokeswoman. Truck driver James E. Bennett, 34, of Baton Rouge, was charged with negligent homicide and failure to maintain control, Mixon said. Bennett will be arraigned July 24 before state District Judge J.J. Erny, said state District Judge Jerome Barbera III, who magistrated Bennett this morning. Barbera assigned Bennett an indigent defender, and Bennett's bond remains at $50,000. As Bennett arrived at the Courthouse Annex about 9 a.m., a Baton Rouge television camera crew filmed his entrance but he did not answer questions. "(Andolsek) was just a great person to know," said Mary Clausen, whose husband Brian grew up with Andolsek. "We're very fortunate for having known him, he will be missed badly. He was dear friend to everyone who knew him." Andolsek was often seen working in the yard of the home he built on the same stretch of La. 1 where he grew up. Andolsek's parents, brother and sister live next door to one another in the St. John community. "No one can believe what happened," Clausen said. "He just enjoyed life to the fullest." Andolsek was well known in Thibodaux and used to pay visits to the Peltier-Lawless Developmental Center, said Miguel Ramirez, program director at the facility. "He used to come out after the season or when he was here for holidays," Ramirez said. "A couple of the guys over here are very into football and LSU. He use to come talk to them and share with them.” The football fans at the center have autographed pictures of Andolsek, Ramirez said. Andolsek also served as grand marshal; of the Jaycees Walk America campaign in February. Mass of Christian burial will be at1 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
