Washington Staff Writer Police are still investigating the beating death of the Rev. Hunter Horgan III, rector of St. John Episcopal Church, who was found dead in the church hall Thursday morning, Police Chief Norman "Nookie" Diaz said. The victim's car, a 1990 gray Toyota Camry, was found Thursday night in the 1200 block of St. Charles Street, about one-half mile from the church, a report from Diaz said. It was parked in a parking spot with the license plate facing a fence. "He seems to have died from multiple, severe blows to the head," Diaz said. "There appears to be forced entry into the church hall." A parishioner found Hunter's body, fully-clothed, lying in a pool of blood, Diaz said. State Police crime scene investigators were called to the scene, Diaz said. A small group of church members gathered in front of the church Thursday morning to watch from beyond a police line as investigators went in and out of the church hall. The body was removed from the building about 11:30 and taken to the Lafourche Parish Coroner's Office for an autopsy. The autopsy will be performed in Jefferson Parish. Parishioners reported that Hunter went to worship service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, visited the sick in Terrebonne General Hospital and was at the church hall between 5 and 6 p.m., Diaz said. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hammond. Interment will be in Grace Memorial Episcopal Church Cemetery in Hammond.
