Clarence "Toon" Southall Jr., 73, the first black member of the Assumption Parish School Board, died this morning. Southall was a native and resident of Plattenville. He founded Southall Funeral Home in 1952. He was president of Williams and Southall Funeral Home. He was elected to the School Board in 1971 and served from 1972 to 1986. He was also the first black selected to serve on the Lafourche Basin Levee Board. Southall was a veteran of World War II. He was past state supreme commander of the Knights of St. Peter Claver and past supreme purser of the fourth degree Knights of St. Peter Claver. He was the husband of Margurite Southall and the father of Julie Johnson, Phyliss Thomas, Theresa Julian, Micheal and Maurice Southall. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcelle and Helen Pitre Usey Sr.; a brother, Remy Usey, and sisters, Ula Bonvillian and Laura Usey. ========================================================================== Nov 6, 1992 ========================================================================== MARY AYO PELTIER The funeral of May Ayo Peltier, 90, Thibodaux philanthropist and civic leader, was Saturday morning at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Peltier died Friday at 11:10 a.m. at Thibodaux Hospital and Health Centers following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Harvey A. Peltier, Thibodaux lawyer, Louisiana state senator and president of Citizens Bank and Trust Co., now First Interstate Bank of South Louisiana. The Peltiers were instrumental in promoting numerous philanthropic causes in the Thibodaux area, many relating to education and recreation. They were strong supporters of Nicholls State University, St. Joseph Elementary and E.D. White Catholic High School. The stadium at E.D. White carries the Peltier name as does the city's primary park and recreation center. Buildings at Nicholls are named for members of the Peltiers families. Harvey Peltier died Nov. 12, 1977; after his death, May Peltier donated the home they had built along Bayou Lafourche in Thibodaux to the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. The home is being used as the bishop's residence. A native of Raceland, Peltier was the only daughter of Dr. Jackson J. Ayo one of the earliest doctors on Bayou Lafourche and Alida Lepine Ayo. She was educated at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. She was married to Harvey Peltier on Dec. 22, 1921. Along with her duties as wife and mother of four and a daughter she was a member of the Thibodaux College Mothers Club, the St. Joseph Hospital now Thibodaux Hospital and Health Centers Auxiliary and many other civic organizations. She is survived by three sons Donald Peltier, Dr. James Peltier and Richard Peltier, all of Thibodaux; one daughter, Mrs. Warren Harang Jr. of Thibodaux; 2; grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parent’s and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Harvey A. Peltier Jr.; three brothers, Jackson J. Ayo Jr. Hubert Ayo and Dr. T. Benton Ayo; and five grandchildren. Dupont, a resident and native of Thibodaux, was a graduate Tulane University in New Orleans where he studied business administration. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. From 1968 to 1987, Dupont served as purchasing agent at Nicholls State University. He was also president of Dupont Realty Co. of Houma, and Interstate Wholesale Grocers, two family-owned businesses. He was also a charter member of the Bayou Country Club. During the 1960s, he was manager of Percy-Lobdell Wholesale Grocers. He was buried at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.
