He was 91. He was owner and director of the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Mass., since 1930, the year his mentor, Charles Webster Hawthorne died. Hensche was the student of and assistant to the American impressionist painter when the studio was known as the Cape Cod School of Art. In his book, "The Art of Seeing and Painting," Hensche emphasized how color is affected by different qualities of light. "Henry Hensche was probably the finest living practitioner of the theories of impressionism in the United States;" said Rob Carpenter, assistant professor of art at Nicholls State University. "That is evident by the thousands of students who sought him out in his long career." "He was an amazing artist -extremely talented - and maybe the last true impressionist from his era," said Dennis Sipiorski, head of the Nicholls State University Department of Art. "He taught a lot of people in the country and locally. His students are influencing others in his impressionistic techniques of light and color." Hensche was born Feb. 20, 1901, the only son of a Chicago baker and his wife. In 1921, he received the Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship. In addition to studying with Hawthorne, he studied at the Art Instiute of Chicago, the National Academy Design, the Art Students League and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design in New York. His work can be found in the Fort Wayne Art institute in Indiana, the Chrysler Collection in Norfolk, Va., the Mint Museum in North Carolina, the Harvard Club in New York and the Oklahoma City Museum. His one man exhibitions have been sponsored by the Evanston Ill. Art Association in 1935, the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York in 1936, the Oklahoma Art Association in 1960, the Wiener Gallery in 1965 and Fosley & Wien in 1963. In addition, his work has been exhibited by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, the National Academy of Design, the Philadelphia Art Association, the Chicago Art Institute and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Among the awards he received was the Hallgarten Prize of the National Academy of Fine Arts in 1929. His memberships included the Boston Guild of Artists and the Provincetown Art Association. In 1988 he published "The Art of Seeing and Painting," a book detailing his painting philosophy and Techniques.
