in Labadieville for Udell E. Burdis, 51, a native and resident of Thibodaux, who 
died at 10 p.m. Friday.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until funeral time today at the church.

Dismissal will be at 11 a.m. Friday with interment in the church cemetery.

She was the mother of Lois T. Vicks, Bernadette T. Hill, Karen T. Starks and 
Marsha and Kevin Burdis; sister of Dorothy Sanders and Carol, Medrick, Alton, 
Lloyd, Lionel, Oscar Jr., Leroy, Larry, Richard and Ricky Burdis Sr. She is also 
survived by six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Beulah P. Burdis, and a 
brother, Tillman Burdis.

Catholic Church in Labadieville for Lydia C. Clause, 77, a native of Thibodaux and 
resident of Labadieville, who died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was the mother of Gilbert Jr., Willie, Huey "Johnny" and David Besson, Mary 
Louise "Susie" Dupree, Rosa Mae Jones, Barbara Cooley and Carrie Bourgeois; sister 
of Wilson Andras and Therese Usey. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren, 37 
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband of first marriage, Gilbert Besson Sr., 
husband by third marriage, St Clair Clause; parents, Clovis Sr. and Louisa 
Thibodaux Andras; a son, Edward J. Besson. She was also preceded in death by 
three brothers and a sister.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at the Holy Savior 
Catholic Church in Lockport for Theresa Rivet, 64, a native and resident of 
Lockport, who died Saturday.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was the wife of Roy Rivet; mother of Roy Jr. and Larry Rivet and Leana R. 
Gettle; sister of Joyce Slatter and Norman, Nolan and Francis Rivet. She is also 
survived by six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Josephine Gros Chiasson; and a 
daughter, Linda Rivet.

In correction to Tuesday's death notice for Theresa Rivet, she was the sister 
of Norman, Nolan and Francis Chiasson. She was also survived by two great-

Thibodaux attorney dies at 41

Staff Writer

F. SMITH "SMITTY" KNOBLOCH, a Thibodaux attorney who made an unsuccessful bid for 
Lafourche Parish District Attorney in 1990, died of cancer at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

He was 41.

Knobloch came from a family of lawyers. His father was a judge. Both of his 
grandfathers were lawyers.

"I don't ever remember not wanting to be a lawyer," he said in a 1990 interview 
with the Daily Comet.

He had a reputation as being a good one.

"If I had gotten in trouble with the law, I would want him as my lawyer," said 
retired Judge Wollen Falgout, another unsuccessful candidate in the 1990 election.

"He was my opponent, but he was my friend,” Falgout said.  “If he believed in 
something, he wouldn’t back off.”

"I enjoyed having him, in my court. He was always prepared. He was very 
persistent."

Knobloch was a native and resident of Thibodaux. He graduated from E.D. White 
Catholic High School and attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana and 
Nicholls State University before graduating from the Louisiana State University 
Law School in 1976.

He was an avid musician. He started playing piano when he was 7 and played in a 
rock ‘n’ roll band while he was in high school and college. In his later life, 
he limited his public performances to playing piano at St. Genevieve Catholic 
Church on Sundays.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Thibodaux Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Seibold Knobloch; daughters, Nicole and 
Katherine Knobloch; parents, retired Judge Bernard L. Knobloch and Mary Lou 
Hoffpauir Knobloch; and brothers, James and Bernard Knobloch Jr.

Donations to the St. Genevieve Catholic School are preferred.

He was also survived by 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Toups.

Toups was a writer, researcher, and historian who had been active in genealogy 
since 1958. He was a life member of St. Mary Parish Genealogical Society and 
served on the board of Directors of Terrebonne Genealogical Society from 1985 to 
1991. He translated old French documents dating back to the middle 1600s and 
authored and published three genealogical books. He has also lectured on 
genealogy and history.
