GOURGUES, a native of Napoleonville, died at 4 a.m. today at the age of 84. A resident of Thibodaux, Gourges served as superintendent of Lafourche Parish Schools from 1941-45, overseeing three high schools and 29 elementary schools. He was recalled to active duty during World War II, serving until his retirement in 1957. Gourgues was also ROTC Director for the parish from 1966-74. After mandatory retirement from the school system, he was purchasing agent for the City of Thibodaux until 1976. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Mausoleum. Gourgues was a 1971 recipient of the Francis M. Durel Service Award from Thibodaux Memorial Post 5097, Veterans of Foreign Wars for outstanding service to the community. During World War II, Gourgues served in England and Africa as assistant director of Administrative, Fiscal and Logistical Operations for the Port of Oran in North Africa. He also served as logistical officer for the Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot and at U.S. Army Force Headquarters, China Overseas Theater Operations. Gourgues was a 1927 graduate of Thibodaux High School and 1931 graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in math and science. He became an assistant principal in Lafourche Parish in 1931, taking a leave of absence from 1933-34 and 1935-38 for active duty with the U.S. Army as Company Commander of Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. Gourgues was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Woodmen of the World, Young Men's Business and Professional Club and numerous military organizations. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club and Colonel Club. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and past president of the St. Joseph PTA. He also served as fund-raising captain for the building and of St. Joseph and E.D. White Catholic School. He was the husband of Lucy Russo Gourgues; father of Michael, "Bob", Bill, Harold Jr., and Walter Gourgues, Diana Luikart, Tony Hernandez, Missy Landry and Catherine Shaver. Tabor; mother of Gilbert, Wilson, Millard, Linda and Marie Tabor and Judy Chiasson; sister of Mary Louise Morvant. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Giroir; and two granddaughters, Michelle and Millie Tabor.
