Jones of Thibodaux; stepfather of Lance Jones and Dionne Sargent, both of Thibodaux; brother of Jeffery Duncan, Donald, Ronald and Patricia A. Larose, 54, pastor of St. Mary Magdalene parish in Metairie for the past 10 years, died of a heart attack Sunday, Aug. 27 while on a visit to France. Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of his body in New Orleans. Larose was a native of Thibodaux and attended St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. As a seminarian he did mission work in Guatemala during the summer months and was ordained for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 1968. He served as a parochial vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Maurice in New Orleans before receiving his first pastorate in 1977 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, He remained there until 1985, when he was assigned pastor of St. Mary Magdalene. A former chaplain in the National Guard, Larose also served as a chaplain to the Boy Scouts and to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Madonna. He was twice elected to the Priests' Council of the archdiocese and was a member of the Archdiocesan Clergy Personnel Committee. He was named a monsignor in 1988. Bourgeois High and Evergreen Junior High schools and a Daily Comet correspondent, died from a hemorrhage at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31. Powell, a native of Waxahacie, Texas and resident of Houma, had just started his job as vocal music director at H.L. Bourgeois and Evergreen. Prior to this school year, he worked for five years as a special education teacher for the Assumption Parish school system. He also worked for Terrebonne Parish schools a total of 18 years. Powell worked as a freelance writer for the Daily Comet for the past five years covering Assumption Parish government. He was the husband of Beth Martin Powell; father of Kristen Powell of Houma and Brittany Powell of Harvey; son of Eldon L. and Robbie Jo Hodge Powell of Morgan City; and brother of Kimberly Boudreaux of Bayou Vista.
