Powell Dr. Joseph Lee Powell Jr., a general surgeon and Thibodaux resident for 40 years, died of a heart attack in his home early Sunday morning. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Co-cathedral at 11 a.m. Tuesday for Powell, 71, a native of Brighton, Ala., and a resident of Thibodaux, who died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church. Burial will be in St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery. He was the husband of Debbie Tesson Powell, father of Joseph L. Powell III and stepfather of Wesley Walker. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mimi Margaret Powell; and his first wife, Naomi Margaret Powell. His wife Debbie remembers him as a compassionate man with a "zest for life." "He really cared about people," she said. She said he was a role model for young people and set an example of what people can do if they apply themselves. "He inspired young people to get the best education they could," she said. "He really believed in higher education." Walter Hackney, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Thibodaux, where Powell was a member, said Powell was very generous. Powell donated much of the money to build the brick and wood sign out in front of the Church and also donated money for new Bibles and books which fill the pews today. Hackney said. "He was extremely generous," he said. "He was always friendly, too," he said. "He seemed to have a real concern about his patients. There was more than just a professional commitment to his patients." Powell maintained a private practice and performed surgery at St. Joseph Hospital and Thibodaux Hospital. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, a past president of the Reeves Medical Society, director emeritus of Argent Bank, an E. D. White Foundation board member and past grand marshal of the Thibodaux Firemen's Fair. Donations can be made to the E. D. Prior to serving in Lafourche Parish, she served with the Chinchuba Institute for the Deaf in Marrero in 1944. She joined the facility of Annunciation School in Bogalusa in 1979.
