"Ed" Chiasson, 85, a former Lafourche Parish public official who founded a minor league baseball team in Thibodaux, died Saturday morning after a lengthy illness. Chiasson, a lifelong resident of Thibodaux, served as a Lafourche School Board member, Parish Council member and Thibodaux police chief. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph Co- Cathedral in Thibodaux. Burial was in the church Cemetery. Chiasson, known for his outspoken opinions and his characteristic wide-brimmed white hat, was described by friends and relatives as a self-made man. He served on the School Board from 1986 to 1990. He served on the Parish Council from 1980 to 1984, when he was defeated by a one-vote margin. Chiasson served briefly as Thibodaux's police chief during the administration of Mayor Leonard ToupS. He was a long-time member of the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department. In 1946, Chiasson became the first president of the Thibodaux Baseball Club. He organized its team, the Thibodaux Giants. The team was a part of the Evangeline League, a Louisiana-based minor league. He served as league president for two years. Chiasson left school in the third-grade to help support his mother by working as a golf caddie at Thibodaux's country club and selling newspapers. At age 12, he went to work doing odd jobs at Celotex Corp. At 17, he became an apprentice at Thibodaux Boiler Works. He became a full-fledged boilermaker and worked repairing the steam boilers that powered early oil rigs in South Louisiana's bays and marshes. In 1934 he started his own business. Arc Welding and Machine Works, where he manufactured boilers until the start of World War II created shortages of steel. The company then focused on repairing sugarcane harvesting equipment. In the 1950s, when south Louisiana's oil industry began to blossom, Chiasson made his mark by building the first successful swamp pullboat, a steel boat used to carry seismic drill rigs and instruments for the geophysical industry. The company became the largest supplier of the boats in the industry. He retired in 1973 and soon after decided to try his hand at politics. State Rep. Warren Triche, D-Chackbay, called Chiasson "My Old Padnah." back from their days together on the School Board, he said. Triche gave up the board seat to enter the Louisiana Legislature in 1987. "He told me once that he had run in about 17 different races for political office," Triche said. "Many folks who ran for public office sought his political support and advice.... Regardless of what actual schooling he had in his earlier days, he was well-versed on the political scene. He touched a great many young lives in the baseball arena. That carried on naturally into the political area later on in life." Former Lafourche Parish School Board President Roy Sobert of Thibodaux remembers Chiasson as an outspoken man who despite his lack of education had experience to compensate. "He was outspoken," Sobert said. "He did a good job on the board." Sobert remembers Chiasson's great skill and ingenuity in his welding craft. But most of all, Sobert remembers him as a dear friend. "He was exactly that, a friend for years," Sobert said. "We fished together for maybe 25 years. We built a camp together. We were real, real, real close friends - a very nice guy. They didn't make them any better." He was the husband of Mary Greco-Chiasson; father of Edwin H. Chiasson Jr., and Stella Chiasson Lasseigne, a member of the Thibodaux City Council; and brother of Edith Chiasson Gros. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
