Mike Kowdourdis, 81, a native of Chios, Greece, and resident of Raceland died 
at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 28, 1997.

He was the husband of Lucy "Nellen" T. Kowdourdis; father of Mrs. Nicko 
Travlos; brother of Johnny Kountouroudas.  He is also survived by three grandchildren.

Lorene Cox

A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Williams and Southall 
Funeral Home in Napoleonville for Lorene Cox, 23, a native of Evansville, Ind., 
and resident of Paincourtville, who died at 8 p.m. March 1, a victim of 
domestic violence.

The Rev. Elvin Lacy will officiate.

She was the daughter of Clydy Lorene Cox of Lacombe.  She is also survived by 
two sons and a daughter.

Lorena Dufrene

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Hilary of 
Poitiers Catholic Church in Mathews for Lorena Plaisance Dufrene, 76, a native 
of Gheens and resident of Raceland, who died at 8:30 p.m. March 1, 1997.

Burial was in Holy Savior Cemetery in Lockport.

She was the mother of Calbert, Kevin and Louella Dufrene and Sylvia Theriot; 
sister of Lenest, Tony, Gilbert and Edith Plaisance, Clemence Falgout, Esther 
Boudreaux, Velma Arabie, Edna Babin and Elsie Matherne.  She is also survived 
by 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Dufrene; parents, Alexis and 
Emelie Dufrene Plaisance; a brother, Levy Plaisance; and four sisters, Earline 
and Nazy Orgeron, Hazel Matherne and Vesta Badeaux.

She was a parishioner of St Hilary.

Earl Melancon

Religious services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United 
Pentecostal Church in Thibodaux for former Thibodaux Police Chief Earl Melancon 
Sr., 76, a native and resident of Thibodaux who died at 9:35 a.m., Saturday 
March 1, 1997 in Alexandria from complications associated with a brain tumor.

"His family brought him home to be buried in the community he loved," said his 
son Craig Melancon.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. today at Thibodaux Funeral Home and 
from 8 a.m. until funeral time Tuesday.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux. 

Honor guards from the Thibodaux Police Department and the Lafourche Parish 
Sheriffs Office will take part in the service.

Melancon will receive a full police burial complete with flag draped coffin, 
21-gun-salute and taps.

He was the husband of Dell Knapp Melancon; father of Earl Jr., Reggie, Larry, 
Ronnie, Craig and Steven Melancon; and brother of Teal Cancienne.  He is also 
survived by 11 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Bridget 
Catholic Church in Schriever for May M. Schouest, 84, a native of Bourg and 
resident of Schriever, who died at 12:45 p.m. March 1, 1997.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was the mother of Robert Schouest Jr., Barbara Frederick, Ellen Hebert, 
Karen Bergeron, Maureen Smith and Kathleen Couclasure; sister of Alphonse and 
Adolph Blanchard, Edna Bascle and Lucille Robichaux.  She is also survived by 
17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Schouest Sr.; parents, 
Alphonse and Ezoline Matherne Blanchard; and two brothers, Emile and Henry 
Blanchard.

Betsy Ayo 

Betsy Cheramie Ayo, wife of Nicholls State University President Donald Ayo, 
died at 11:15 a.m. Monday March 2, 1997, at her home on the Nicholls campus.

Visitation is from 6-10 p.m. today at the President's Home on the Nicholls 
campus and from 9:30 a.m. until funeral time Wednesday at the church.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ayo, 61, a native of Galliano and resident of 
Thibodaux, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 
in Cut Off. 
Burial is in the church cemetery.

In addition to the Center for Women and Government, Ayo was also active in the 
Lafourche Parish Commission for Women and Kappa Alpha chapter of Delta Zeta 
sorority. She was an honorary member and adviser since its founding in 1992 to 
the Nu Alpha Epsilon Honor Society for non traditional students.

Ayo was a charter member of MacDonell United Methodist Children's Services, 
founder and president of Lajenuesse Home Demonstration Club and a founding 
member of Patrons of the Arts in Galliano.

She was also involved in fundraising for E.D. White Catholic High School, 
Cystic Fibrosis, the American Heart Association, United Way, Boy Scouts and 
Catholic Charities.  She chaired the Tri-Parish Volunteer Activist Gala in 
1986.

She was the wife of Dr. Donald J. Ayo; mother of Christopher and Allison Ayo; 
daughter of Theresa G. Cheramie; and sister of Teddy J. Cheramie, Mrs. Raymond 
(Annette) Leloup, Mrs. LG. (Carolyn) LePlante and Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Huth.  
She is also survived by two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew "Meg" Cheramie; and brother, 
Russell A Cheramie.

grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Weatherspoon; parents, 
Samuel Sr. and Rebecca Duncan Hawkins; a son, Stanley Hawkins; two daughters, 
Jo Ann and Dianne Weatherspoon; a sister, Alice Hawkins; and three brothers, 
Lester, Charles and Samuel Hawkins Jr.

She was a homemaker and a member of Morning Star Baptist.

the brother of Raymond Charitat He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Emelia Foret Charitat; his 
brother Jean Charitat and his sister Juliette Johnson.

Charitat graduated from Louisiana State University in 1941 with a bachelor's 
degree in accounting and went on to serve as a captain in the military until 
1945. After his discharge he attended Loyola University for a year studying 
accounting. He worked as a senior accountant from 1946 to 1948 with Peat, 
Marwich, Mitchell and Co. and became a certified public accountant.

Charitat was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and was 
an honorary member of the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. He was also the treasurer 
of the Thibodaux Development Foundation, (forerunner of the Chamber of 
Commerce) and was chairman of the first Thibodaux Civil Service Board.
