Whyte entered the Navy two days after Pearl Harbor as a seaman. In 1942, he was commissioned a naval officer and awarded his naval aviator wings. He served in the European theater and was awarded the navy air medal and presidential citation. He achieved the rank of naval commander. After WWII he continued his military service as a naval aviator and flew in the Berlin air lift. He retired from the Air National Guard with a total of 32 years, 8 months of military service and the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was the husband of Joyce Whyte and the father of Gordon Whyte. He is also survived by two granddaughters and a great-grandchild. Whyte spent nearly half a century dedicating his life to civic service. He joined the Thibodaux Lion's Club in 1953. He never missed a meeting. He held every office in the Lion's Club, was a three time president and was awarded the Lion of the Year seven times. Whyte also served 8 years on the Thibodaux Recreation Board, and was the cub master for the Thibodaux Cub Scout pack for nearly a decade.
