Landry Long-time official, friend to be missed By Julie Summa Staff Writer When he began serving as Lafourche Parish clerk of court in 1952, Ambroise Landry decided he would be the one to make a difference. Slowly but surely, he gathered a flock of young attorneys pondering public office to him, and with a few words of advice, sent them on their way. Members of that flock of future politicians were shocked when they heard that Ambroise H. "La Pip" Landry died Wednesday at age 82. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Co-cathedral in Thibodaux. Visitation will be 5 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Landry's Funeral Home and 8 a.m. until funeral time at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Library, Thibodaux Branch, P.O. Box 5514, Thibodaux, LA 70302. "He was such an institution in the parish," Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-Chackbay, said. "He was such an inspiration for so many of us coming up. "When you came out of law school to Lafourche Parish, the first person you met in your professional life was Ambroise," Tauzin said. "He made it pleasant for you to come in and learn and went out of his way to teach every young lawyer how to use the office." State Sen. Ron Landry, D-Laplace, wasn't surprised that his father was able to touch the lives of so many. "He had a big effect on a lot of people," Landry said. "When I was younger, I recall Edward Dufresne Jr., now a judge on the 5th District Court of Appeal, came over to learn from my father how to be a Clerk of Court in St. Charles Parish. He'd just been elected. "He believed in helping people," Landry said. "That was one of his best qualities." Dufresne was elected clerk of court of St Charles Parish in 1963, he said. He had just completed law school. "When I was first elected, I was an attorney, and, as such, I know you should know more about the clerk's office," he said. "But in law school they skip that section in the books saying the clerk would take care of that" Dufresne came to Landry's office and spent a few days with him at both his house and office and saw how he did things. "Ambroise gave me a good insight on how an office should function," he said. "He really gave me a good start from the very beginning." Dufresne became a judge in 1979 and continued to heed political advice from Landry. "Whatever advice he gave me sure worked because in the eight races I've run for judge since I've never had opposition," he said. Landry won his first election as clerk of court in 1952 and served until-1984. "He contributed so much to everybody," Sen. Landry said. "Of course he was a good father. It's just hard to express how much he meant to the family and also to the community." Ambroise Landry didn't stop helping people when he closed his office door. He was constantly involved with everything from the Knights of Columbus, to the firemen to the local library. "He was always willing to give that 150 percent," Sen. Landry said. Landry's community involvement also included co-founding the North Thibodaux Fire Co. 1 in 1949 and attending the 1973 Constitution Convention. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Thibodaux High Band Boosters' Club. "Ambroise Landry was an inspiration to anyone wanting to run or seek public office," state Rep. Warren Triche, D-Chackbay, said. He was startled on the floor of the state Legislature with the news of Landry's death. "With his long tenure as clerk, he touched probably as many people in Lafourche Parish as anyone," Triche said. When Triche began his political career, he sought out Landry as a mentor. "I went to see him to seek advice and words of wisdom on the political front that I knew he could provide," Triche said. "He graciously assisted me in providing me with advice and guidance in the political arena. "He will be sadly missed." Lafourche Parish District Attorney Walter "Butch" Naqiun remembers working part- time for Landry while still in college. "I can only say that he's to be commended for so many years of valuable public servic e," Naquin said. "I started in the DAs office in 1972 and worked with him for many, many years." Naquin remembers Landry as one of the best, he said. "He was a hands-on public official," he said. "He dealt with the public in a most respectful and kind manner." As Tauzin entered his political career, Landry was still always there with wisdom and counsel when asked. He must have gotten it from his parents, Tauzin said. "His folks lived in Chackbay and I got to meet and know his mom and dad during my first campaign in 1971," Tauzin said. They had a habit of leaving a glass of water out on the windowsill each night to drink in the morning, he said. "I asked them the secret of their incredible energy and longevity," Tauzin said. He was shown the glass and the dew that had gathered on it overnight. "I don't know if it's the water, dew or getting up at 4:30 in the morning," the father said. "But I'm not changing it" Lafourche Parish Chief Judge Jerrome J. Barbera III remembers Landry as always eager to help young lawyers and treating them with respect. "He was always available to people who needed his advice, labor or time," Barbera said. "His community service didn't stop after retirement" =============================================================================== Source: The Lafourche Daily Comet Submitted by: Chris Tidwell Louis Breaux Jr. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Bayou Black for Judge Louis W. Marie Louise Gross Lepine, 91, was a native of Lake Providence and a resident of Thibodaux for more than 50 years. Lepine died at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center due to respiratory problems. She was known to many as a kind individual who loved helping people. Lepine came to the Lafourche area to teach English after graduating from Louisiana State University in the 1920s. Throughout her teaching career she taught at Nicholls State University and in several parishes including Lafourche, Assumption and Terrebonne. She was drawn to the South Louisiana area because she was a descendant of Lafourche's first Judge Pierre Daspit DeSant Amant, said Mina McKee, Lepine's niece and caretaker. "What was unique about her, as she got older and weaker, her mind was completely alert," McKee said. A few weeks before she died, Lepine was quoting passages from old Shakespearean plays. Lepine's father was the owner of Laurel Plantation, and when he died, she inherited it. Jerry McKee, her nephew-in-law, worked with her on the plantation for 24 years. He remembers her as a good person who gave money to charities. Dr. Philip and Yvonne Uzee were close to Lepine. Yvonne grew up on the Lepine's plantation. Yvonne's father worked as a bookkeeper there and they've been friends ever since. Philip recalls Lepine as a teacher who loved her students. "She was always very proud of her students - she was a role model to them," Philip said. "She loved people from all walks of life," Mina said. She was generous with her time and energy. Lepine was affiliated with several organizations including: the Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans Colonial Dames, National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons, and founding regent of the Bayou Lafourche Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an active member of Delta Zeta Sorority and helped to organize the chapter at Nicholls. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Sacred Heart League. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St Joseph Co-cathedral Church in Thibodaux. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until funeral time. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
