Romagosa, 81, a native of Thibodaux and resident of Lafayette, who died at 7:03 p.m. March 11, 1999. Burial was at St. John Cemetery Mausoleum. He was the father of David Jerome Romagosa Sr. of Lafayette, John Litton Romagosa of Cecilia and Ann Louise Romagosa of Ft. Collins, Co.; brother of Rev. Msgr. Elmo L. Romagosa of Waveland, Miss.; grandfather of Jennifer Leigh East, David Jerome Jr., Nicole Marie, Elise Achee, Natalie Ann, Jerome Joseph II and Christopher Shirer Romagosa; and great-grandfather of Brittany Leigh and Bailey Elizabeth East. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel "Kizzy" May Litton Romagosa; and parents, Lawrence Gabriel Romagosa and Lydie Elodie Achee. He graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1943 and began his medical practice as a "horse and buggy doctor" in Opelousas before becoming a Board Certified Radiologist and later a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist. He did post graduate work at Tulane University in New Orleans, was a Medical Doctor at Anderson in Houston, the Curie Foundation in Paris, the Royal Marsdon in London, the Christie Hospital in Manchester and St. Luke's in Dublin. He was the first physician to use penicillin in Louisiana, was the first doctor to use radioactive cobalt in the treatment of cancer in Southwest Louisiana and was the first physician in Acadiana to perform a surgical implant of radioactive cesium. He retired in 1983. Following his retirement the Romagosa Radiation Oncology Center was named for him. After his retirement, he founded Hospice of Acadiana, where he served as the volunteer medical director for over ten years. During his 57 year career, he practiced as a General Practitioner, Radiologist, Radiation Oncologist and Mental Health Physician. He received a number of honors during his career. In 1985, President Reagan invited him to the White House where he was honored as a Outstanding Senior Volunteer at a special ceremony held in the Rose Garden. That same year he was named the Humanitarian of the Year by the Louisiana Cattle Festival Association and received the Skip Blair Memorial Award, which was presented by the Mental Health Association of Lafayette. In 1986, he was honored as a Acadiana Volunteer Activist at a special ceremony and later that year was selected to be part of a special U.S. Delegation to the People's Republic of China comp osed of Specialists in Radiation Oncology. Bishop Harry Flynn honored him in 1989 as an outstanding servant of the poor; in 1992, President Bush named him as one of the "2000 Points of Light", giving him special recognition and inviting him to tour Air Force One and in 1998, the La. State Medical Society presented him the Wyeth-Ayerst Award for outstanding community service. He was called "PaPa Buddy" by his grandchildren. He authored a children's novel, "LaFitte's Stowaway" for his grandchildren, which was later published and sold to the general public. He was also a syndicated columnist for the "Sunday Advertiser" where his "Medical Essays" appeared for the last fifteen years. In addition to two novels and his "Medical Essays," he has authored professional papers and has been a frequent lecturer for various community and professional groups.
