George Landry A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montegut for Msgr. George Abraham Landry, 82, a native of Elmer, who died at 8:45 p.m. Dec. 2, 2000. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans. He was a retired priest of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. He attended St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict and received degrees of philosophy and theology from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. Ordained in 1943 for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, he spent his first five years as a priest serving at St. Cecilia and Mater Dolorosa parishes in New Orleans as an associate pastor. In 1950, he became associate pastor at St. Eloi in Theriot, followed by St. Rose de Lima in New Orleans where he was also associate pastor for five years. He assumed his first pastorate at St. Patrick in Gibson where he served for eight years. He was founding pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine in Arabi in 1964, and then he returned to the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux where he served Sacred Heart Church in Montegut as pastor from 1976 until his retirement in 1986. Among his many diocesan positions in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, he served as dean of the Terrebonne Deanery, as a member of the priests' council and as diocesan consultor. Pope John Paul II named him a prelate of honor with the title of monsignor in 1991. Bishop Michael Jarrell will be the main celebrant of the mass to be concelebrated by area priests. She was the mother of Henry Wise of Westwego and Harrison and Leona Wise of Ewellville; and sister of Cindy H. Ewell of New Orleans and Harisa Williams of Klotzville. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Wise Jr.; parents, Celestine and Hayward Hills; daughter, Evelina W. Oliver; son, Jimmie Wise; and four sisters and three brothers. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Moriah No. 17 Order of Eastern Stars, Heroins of Jericho, Israel Walker Lodge No. 1228 Elks and mother of the church at Virginia Baptist Church. Williams and Southall Funeral Home of Napoleonville is in charge of the arrangements. Correction In the obituary of John Savoie, which ran in Thursday's newspaper, his wife was incorrectly identified. John Savoie was the husband of Eula A. Savoie.
