Tuesday -- January 16, 2001 Louise Charitat Louise Barlow Charitat died Jan. 14, 2001 of natural causes at the Forest Manor Nursing Home in Covington. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Charitat graduated from Louisiana Normal College in 1924 and taught co ntinuously in elementary and secondary schools in Lafourche, Orleans and Jefferson parishes until retiring in 1984. She served as principal of Sam Barthe School for Boys in New Orleans from 1946 until 1952 and then taught at Ridgewood Preparatory School in Metairie for one year. She and her husband, Jean, opened Ferncrest Private School in New Orleans in 1953 in the Gentily area. The school was moved in 1971 to Hayne Boulevard in New Orleans East. Ferncrest School held a preeminent place among private schools in the New Orleans metropolitan area, both academically and athletically, for all of its 31 years of existence. She was principal and owner of Ferncrest until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. Charitat is survived by her sister, Virgie Lee Alexander of Pensacola, Fla., by her sons Andre "Mac" Charitat of Covington and Jean G. Charitat Jr. of San Jose, Calif.
