Stanislaus Manikowski While area residents are spending the day celebrating the nation's independence, the local Catholic community is also mourning the loss of a priest who spent his early years in the priesthoo d yearning for freedom from Nazi concentration camps. Msgr. Stanislaus Manikowski, retired pastor of St. Mary's Nativity Catholic Church in Raceland, died in Thibodaux Tuesday morning of congestive heart failure. He was 91. Manikowski, a native of Poland, was ordained in 1938 and sent by church officials to Germany, where he was arrested by Nazi soldiers about a year later. He spent nearly six years in concentration camps such as Dachau and Sachsenhausen before being liberated by American troops in April 1945. Those who knew Manikowski describe him as a positive person, despite the horrors he witnessed in his life. "He was a man of very deep faith," said the Rev. Jerry Villamibia of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Houma. "Obviously he would have to be to have withstood the things he's been through." Villairubia said Manikowski kept his cheerful attitude even after a stroke about three years ago slowed him down. Following his stroke, he moved in with Msgr. Donald Ledet, a longtime friend who took over as pastor of St. Mary's Nativity when Manikowski retired from active ministry in 1978. "He was one of a kind," Ledet said. "He was a very good man, a holy man and humble. He was also very patriotic. Not many people realized that about him." Ledet said while Manikowski was in the Nazi concentration camps, he could have been released if he'd lied and told the soldiers he was German. He did not. Despite his love for his native land, Manikowski refused to return to Poland after the war because of the rise of Communism in the country, Ledet said, Instead, he came to America in 1951 and later became a citizen. "He had strong feelings against both Nazism and Communism," Ledet said. "He often said young Americans didn't appreciate how good they have it compared to those in other lands." Both Ledet and Villarrubia emphasized Manikowski's love of children. He spent time playing with the children at St. Mary's Nativity when he served there and, in his later years, often went to area schools and talked to students about the Holocaust. "Kids loved him," Villarrubia said. "He was just bubbly." Manikowski tried to keep busy even after his stroke, the priest said. "Only two weeks ago, he was approved for a motorized wheelchair." Villarrubia said. "He got to use it for two weeks before he died." Villarrubia said Manikowski was hospitalized Friday for heart failure, only one of a series of hospital stays he'd had. "We thought it was going to be the same thing," the priest said. "Him going in and getting medication to bring his heart back under control and then he'd get to go home." Ledet said Manikowski's popularity would likely lead many people to pay their respects at his wake and funeral, both of which are to be held at St. Mary's Nativity. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. funeral Saturday. Burial will be in the priests' tomb at the church cemetery. Villarrubia said he would always remember Manikowski for his good disposition. "Whenever anyone asked if they could do anything for him." Villarrubia said, "he would say, Just one thing. Keep smiling." Ledet said while he is mourning his friend, he is happy Manikowski is no longer suffering. "I always used to have this joke with him," Ledet said, 'Every birthday, he- would ask why he was still around and I would tell him, 'Because you're not bad enough for Hell and you ain't good enough for Heaven.' I guess now he's good enough for Heaven." ========================== Daily Comet Submitted by: Chris Tidwell Kelcey Eymard A religious service was held at 1 p.m. today at Christian Fellowship Church in Larose for Kelcey Matthews Eymard, 23, a native and resident of Cut Off, who died at 3:01 a.m. July 4, 2002.
