Dr. Sarah Marks Braud, a native of Dothan, Ala., and resident of Hot Springs, Ark., died Aug. 14 of complications after surgery. She was 74. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until funeral time at the church and burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Braud was a familiar face in Thibodaux for many years, beginning as a pediatrician in 1953, after graduating from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1951 and completing her residency. In 1963, she became medical director of the Lafourche Parish Health Unit and, in 1968, was appointed director of health departments for Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes. In 1981, she became assistant secretary for the state Department of Health and Human Resources' Office of Public Health, serving as the chief health officer for the state. Braud's daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hodnett of Baton Rouge, said her mother kept busy even after her retirement in 1987. "She was one of the most delightful people you'd ever meet," Hodnett said. "She was so involved in everything. She spent a lot of time traveling, visiting her grandchildren. A month before she died, she was camping with a friend." Hodnett praised her mother's strength. "She overcame a lot of hardships," she said. "She was a widow at 40, with seven kids. Three years later, my brother was killed (in a car accident)." Through it all, Hodnett said, Braud was there for her children, as well as others. "She was always active in the PTA and in anything we did," she said. "She really pushed for education about public health issues." Another person deeply affected by Braud's death is Claudia Bourgeois of Thibodaux. Bourgeois worked as Braud's secretary through her years as a pediatrician and during her time as a public health official. "She was very charitable, kind and concerned," Bourgeois said. "She was also involved in many organizations." Braud was a state delegate for the Louisiana Public Health Association and served on the board of the Louisiana chapter of the American Lung Association. In 1987, she received the Charles Dunbar Award for exemplary civil service and was also the recipient of the Francis Durel Award for outstanding citizenship in Thibodaux. Bourgeois said Braud was an excellent person to work for. "When she gave a direction, you followed it," she said. "You didn't ask questions. And she was usually right." Hodnett said Braud affected not only her family and her patients, but anyone who came into contact with her. "I got an e-mail from a woman in Seattle (Thursday) who found out about her death," Hodnett said. "She said my mother was her mentor." Hodnett's pride in Brand was evident as she talked about her. "I get to tell people she was my mom," she said. Both Hodnett and Bourgeois remembered little details that endeared Braud to her family and friends, like her penchant for cooking and her love of golf. "She carried her clubs in the trunk of her car," Bourgeois said. "Bless her heart. You don't forget Sarah."
