Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Ville Platte. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte. He is survived by his wife, Myriam I. Saunders of New Orleans; brother, John D. Saunders of Ville Platte; sons, Dr. J. Jacques Saunders and Henri M. Saunders, both of Baton Rouge; daughter, Danielle Saunders Mixon of Baton Rouge; stepson, Julian Katz of New Orleans; and five grandchildren. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Ville Platte. He served in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air force. He studied at Yale University, the University of Parish and earned a master's degree in French and a Ph.D. in romance languages from Louisiana State University. He was an author, fluent in four languages and a historian. He served as a professor at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. and Nicholls State University, where he taught French and Spanish. He was a member of the National Association of Scholars and the Louisiana Committee on the French Revolution.
