The date preceding the obituary is the date of posting on the WWW, not the date of death. ================================ September 02. 2004 12:00AM Henry Yoes Jr. Henry Eugene "Gene" Yoes Jr., 81, a resident of Gonzales, died Aug. 30, 2004. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexander Funeral Home in Norco. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, with burial at the St. Charles Cemetery. He is survived by his children, Henry E. Yoes III of Lake Charles, Marsha Y. Sciortino of Mandeville, Pamela Y. Leon of Baton Rouge, Michael Yoes Sr. of Destrehan, Cynthia Yoes of Grand Isle, Patrick Yoes Sr. of Norco, Rebecca Y. Becnel of Luling and Tracy Yoes of Gonzales; 21 grandchildren, three great- grandchildren; three daughters-in-law; and four sons-in-law. He was born in Baton Rouge and graduated from Istrouma High School before entering the U.S. Army and participating in World War II. He reentered Louisiana State University where he graduated in journalism in 1948. He began working for the Abbeville Meridional newspaper. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Army, and then returned to civilian life by working for the Lafourche Comet. In 1954 he purchased the St. Charles Herald and moved to St. Charles Parish. During his tenure as editor and publisher, he and the newspaper won several Louisiana Press Association awards, including the community Service Award. He also edited the Kenner City News for a while. He operated HEY Services Inc. In 1991, he authored the book "The Pursuit of Academic Excellence," a history of education in St. Charles Parish. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Richard Favrot, who cared for him during a long battle with cancer. He survived throat cancer in the 1970s. Alexander Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was the publisher and editor of the St. Charles Herald.
