The date preceding the obituary is the date of posting on the WWW, not the date of death. ================================ October 25. 2005 12:07PM Billy Smith [Photo] Memorial services will be held from noon to 2 p.m. today at Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel in Carencro for Billy Smith, age 50, who died at 8:55 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at his residence in Carencro. Mr. Smith was a native and resident of Brookhaven, Mississippi for fourteen years, having previously lived and worked in the New Orleans area before he moved to the Lafayette/Carencro area 13 years ago. He was employed in the oilfield industry, having worked for Diamond Offshore Inc. Survivors include his wife, Pamela Ritz Smith of Carencro; three sons, Christopher Smith and Monique Kidder of Arnaudville, unborn grandson, Conner; Justin Smith of Carencro, and Daniel Smith of Carencro; one daughter, Marissa Smith of Carencro; his mother, Betty Jean Crane Smith of Mathews; one sister, Cynthia Smith; two nieces, Crystal and Kimberly; and one nephew, Zachariah. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Ray Smith. Billy Smith was widely known throughout the Lafayette Parish School System as a champion for excellence in education and creation of new opportunities for all students. As a man of action and determination, he believed the needs of children should always come first. Mr. Smith spent many years supporting club and school wrestling in the parish, working with coaches and students from elementary school through high school. Recently, Billy Smith became actively involved as a tireless advocate with the musical community in Lafayette, supporting the fellowship of hard work within the band and string community, admiring and respecting the commitment of the young and old. The family would like to thank Our Lady of Lourdes, especially the fourth and fifth floor nursing staffs, Doctors Malek, Meza, Altdorfer, and Feinberg, for their constant compassion and kindness.
