Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gheens. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, with burial at Holy Savior Cemetery in Lockport. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Pierce Dufrene; sons and daughter-in-law, Meril J. Jr., David and Kim Dufrene and Steve Dufrene; daughters Frances Faye Dufrene and Colette and Johnny Ryals; brother Alton Dufrene; sisters Rita D. Rodrigue, Irene D. Maulding, Bernice D. Baudoin and Jean D. Chaisson; grandchildren Carooline, Meril III, Natalie, Jeremy, Jacob Dufrene, Angeline and husband John Trahan, Christopher Garaway, Rory Ryals, Heidi and husband Cory Comeaux and Amanda Langhley; great-grandchildren Jordan Rogers, Sarah Louviere, Brandon Trahan and Brennan Comeaux. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elier and Leontine Champagne Dufrene; brothers Calvin "C.J." Dufrene, Lester Dufrene and Jerry Dufrene. He was an original member of the Dufrene Brothers Band. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a retired school bus drive and deputy for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. Samart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
