A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Bernadette Catholic Church with burial in Rogers Cemetery in Houma. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Marcel Matherne; sons, Jamie Matherne and wife, Victoria, Byron Matherne and wife, Paula, and Garth Matherne and companion, Kelly; daughter-in-law, Karen Matherne; daughters, Sharon Matherne, Shawn McElroy and companion, Pookie, Siobhan Sellers and husband, William, Sone Kornegay and husband, Michael, Bronwyn Matherne, and Gwen Trahan and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Byron Matherne Jr., Christopher and Zackery Matherne, Cody Bridges, Chaz Goodpastor, Randy and Heather McElroy, Megan Matherne, William Sellers Jr., Jarrod and India Kornegay, and Sarah and Dustin Trahan; and three sisters, Carolyn Hebert, Joy "Chickie" Valure and Joan "Boo" Nolan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude P. and Irene Boudreaux Matherne; brother, Ira "Pappy" Matherne; and sister, Deanne Pontiff. He was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Houma and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed gardening and cooking. Samart Funeral Home of Houma is in charge of arrangements.
