News Article June 14. 2005 11:53AM Toddler's family trying to heal Liz Hackenburg Staff Writer Two days before Dayne Paul Loupe's second birthday, a group of close-knit family members reminisced about the precocious toddler who lost his life in an accident Saturday. Dayne, who would have turned 2 Wednesday, loved nothing more than being with family, said his parents, Ashley Nazio and Jason Loupe of Lockport. "He was a silly little thing. He was crazy. We will miss everything about him," Ashley said, fighting back tears. The fun-loving boy was fishing with his father and a group of relatives on the North Barrios Street Bridge in Lockport when the scene became a nightmare in a moment. The fianceé of Loupe's cousin, Mandy Lynn St. Pierre, had pulled her pickup onto the bridge and stopped to pick up Dayne's 5-year-old cousin. St. Pierre paused to talk to a relative. As she did, Dayne stepped in front of the truck to look for his cousin. "We were right close by them and before I knew it, Mandy was starting to roll off," Loupe said. "Before she could stop or do anything she was already on top of him." Minutes later, Dayne was pronounced dead at the scene. The family members said they will not press charges against St. Pierre and that they have been trying to console her since the accident. "We've been trying to calm her down," Loupe said. Monday morning, the family sat in the spacious carport next to the trailer where Dayne lived with his parents and told story after story about the child while sharing hugs and tears. "He was a very happy baby," Frances Loupe, Dayne's grandmother, said. "He just couldn't be away from nobody." The group recalled Dayne's newly acquired habits of calling his mother by her first name and sitting in his grandfather's special chair. He referred to himself as "baby" and loved to be the center of attention. "His favorite thing to do was make us laugh," said Casey Legendre, a family friend. "If he knew it made us laugh, he'd do it again." Dayne loved his cousins and imitated what he saw them do, the family said. "He repeated everything and did everything they would tell him to do," Justin Loupe, Dayne's uncle, said. "He was so smart. He was doing everything early. We couldn't get over how smart he was. I'm going to miss his personality and all the funny things he did." Legendre said Dayne had been learning the alphabet, colors, numbers and shapes. His favorite number was eight and his color of choice was purple, she said. "He was just getting to the point where he could hold a conversation," Frances said. Justin Loupe said his mornings will be emptier without his son to get him up for breakfast. "That's what I'll miss the most -- him waking me up in the morning to get him something to eat," he said. Even the family dog, Roost, was feeling the loss Monday. The brown dog trotted around the trailer carrying one of Dayne's slippers in her mouth and would not let anyone take it from her. "Dayne followed Roost wherever she went," Justin Loupe said. Wayne Naquin, the family's neighbor, shares the group's grief. "That was my little buddy. Everything I'd do he'd do," Naquin said. "I never called him by name. He was always Buddy. He's up there looking down on us because God needed an angel." The family will hold a balloon release Wednesday evening at the Bayou Side park in Lockport for Dayne's second birthday.
