January 05. 2006 11:57AM Co-founder of local hospital dies Katina A. Gaudet Staff Writer Dr. O.D. Thomas Picture ========== A photo is available for this file. Please go to http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eusgenweb/la/lafourche/obits/dateobits/2006/f0601.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== Dr. O.D. Thomas became fluent in French to better communicate with his patients in the local community. The native of Rosedale, Miss., was an accommodating man when it came to helping his patients, recalls his son Timothy Thomas. Not only did Thomas, who grew up in Mississippi and New Orleans, learn French to converse with a clientele that was mostly French speaking, he also made house calls for his patients into the 1960s. And he was known to trade his services to patients who couldn't otherwise afford them, accepting chickens, vegetables, whatever they could afford for medical attention. A co-founder of one of Thibodaux's earliest hospitals, Thomas died Wednesday. Wanting to be a physician at an early age, Thomas went to sea at 16 years old with the Lyke lines. He started out as a cabin boy and then worked his way up to radio operator. By the time he reached 17 years old, he had been around the world, his son Timothy said. He did all of this to save money in pursuit of his dream -- to attend medical school. He did his pre-medical schooling at Tulane, working in a radio shop at night and attending courses during the day, his daughter Martha Brown said. In 1939, he graduated from LSU Medical School. In 1940, he married Dr. Adele Simmons, who would also become a longtime doctor in the Thibodaux community, where they would open a hospital in 1948. They ran the Simmons-Thomas Hospital until the late 1950s when it transitioned to a clinic. He became a surgeon at another hospital and saw patients out of his clinic. His wife died in 2000. Timothy Thomas recalls a man with a love for medicine and a concern for his patients, but one who also was passionate about outside interests, namely his hobby of creating stained glass windows. A product of Thomas' out of the medical office endeavors can still be seen at the Acadian Wetlands Cultural Center, Jean Lafitte Historical Park and Preserve, a stained glass mural of an egret that remains in the building's stairwell, on the walk up to the local public library. It was an interest that caught the doctor's eye later in life, recalled Brown, noting that her father took up the craft in his 60s and 70s. That interest was symbolic of a man who never tired of education -- even later in life. "He was very intelligent and knowledgeable and well read," Brown said. "He was constantly learning how to do new things." That included taking up French in his 40s in an attempt to better understand his patients and their ailments. Brown recalls those times, remembering how her father would conjugate French verbs in the early mornings. "He never stagnated. Right to the end," she said. Thomas and his wife raised three children -- Dr. Thomas Nelson Thomas, Martha Brown and Timothy Thomas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His son Timothy recalls a man who also was concerned about the quality of life in the local community. "He was just very prominent in the local community and he cared very much for Thibodaux and the people he treated," Timothy Thomas said. Visitation for Thomas will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux, with a religious service to follow at 2 p.m. at the church. Katina A. Gaudet can be reached at 619-6319, 448-7614 or by e-mail at katina.gaudet@dailycomet.com. ======================================================================= January 06. 2006 1:26PM Juy Breaux Sr. Picture ========== A photo is available for this file.
