Funeral services will be at noon today at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Houma. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances McCoy Alexander; three sons, Herbert Rives Alexander Jr., Robert McCoy Alexander and wife, Suzanne, and Karl Timmins Alexander and wife, Shelley; eight grandchildren, Herbert Rives Alexander III and wife, Dawn, Randall Decker Alexander and wife, Lisa, Susan Alexander Hentze and husband, Brett, Sarah Alexander Haydel and husband, Darren, Hays McCoy Alexander Sr. and wife, Amanda, Blair Alexander May and husband, Wade, Brooke Alexander Johnson and husband, Tory, and Whitney Laborde Alexander; three step-grandchildren, Melissa Walker Fitzgerald and husband, Bryan, Elizabeth Walker Pou and husband, Jack, and Cate Walker; 12 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild, Jackson Rives Alexander, Brooke Ashley Haydel, Alexander Matthew Hentze, William Rives Alexander, Katie Blair Haydel, Ava Mary Alexander, Harrison Rives Hentze, Hays McCoy Alexander Jr., Charles McCoy Fitzgerald, Mary Morgan Alexander, Morgan Elizabeth Haydel, Granison Rives Alexander and Ian Randall Herbert Alexander; and three great-grandchildren on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Atala Rives Alexander and Granison Timmins Alexander Sr.; and one brother, Granison Timmins Alexander Jr. He was a member of the class of 1938 at C.E. Byrd High School, then graduated in petroleum engineering from Texas A & M University in 1942. He received his diploma one day, his 2nd Lt. Commission duty the next day and reported for active duty at Ft. Sill, Okla., the following day. His combat duty was in the European theater with the 5th Armored Division 47th Field Artillery. He fought in five campaigns, Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. At one time, he served under Patton's third army and in August 1944, he was awarded the Silver Star. Early in 1946 he went to work for Texaco as a petroleum engineer and spent 30 years with them, mostly in Houma and New Orleans with a short stay in Trinidad, west India. He lived in Houston for 25 years where he started his own consulting firm, Alexander Petroleum Consultants, and later started Herbert R. Alexander Inc. as an independent oil operator. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and Ellendale Country Club. Mr. Cannata was a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic-based Society Order of the Holy Sepulcher, past president of the Louisiana Retail Food Dealers Association and 1970 president of the Chamber of Commerce in Morgan City, Berwick and Patterson area. He was a founder and board member of the former Guaranty Bank and Trust Company in Morgan City. He was a founder and board member of the Affiliated Foods Co-ops in Lafayette. Mr. Cannata was King of the Krewe of Hephaestus in 1970 and Grand Marshall of the Krewe of Hephaestus parade in 1971. He received many awards during his career, among them: The National Food Conference Distinguished Award and The Louisiana Retail Food Dealers Certificate of Merit Award. Along with his wife, they provided and established the Sacred Heart Convent residence for the Sisters of St. Joseph Order. At the age of 22, he enlisted in the Army on July 15, 1944, serving with the 90th Infantry Division, Company B 3rd Army Regiment known as the "Tough Ombres". He fought in the European Theatre. He traveled and fought in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Czechoslovakia and England and returned home due to injuries. Because of his sense of duty and loyalty, he re-enlisted as a member of the military police with the 203rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Military Police Battalion in Austria and Germany. Upon returning home for the second time, he worked as a boat captain and then purchased his own boat, the "BenDoris." He was a shrimper for 36 years and later worked for Delta Iron on a pile-driving crew. He was a member of the Lagniappe Fair Workers for numerous years. He was a life member and past Post Commander of the Aswell L. Picou VFW Post No. 9608, a life member of the Kenneth C. Boudreaux American Legion Post No. 380, the Holy Name Society, a 3rd degree life member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5013, a 4th degree Knights of the Father Patrick Curren Society, a life member of Ward 7 Citizens Club and a life member of the Chauvin Senior Citizens Club. For many years he worked at both the VFW and American Legion bingo games until his health no longer allowed. He was loving, gentle, funny, generous, loyal, hard working and honest. He lived a long and fruitful life, touching many along life's path. At the age of 22, he enlisted in the Army on July 15, 1944, serving with the 90th Infantry Division, Company B 3rd Army Regiment known as the "Tough Ombres". He fought in the European Theatre. He traveled and fought in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Czechoslovakia and England and returned home due to injuries. Because of his sense of duty and loyalty, he re-enlisted as a member of the military police with the 203rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Military Police Battalion in Austria and Germany. Upon returning home for the second time, he worked as a boat captain and then purchased his own boat, the "BenDoris." He was a shrimper for 36 years and later worked for Delta Iron on a pile-driving crew. He was a member of the Lagniappe Fair Workers for numerous years. He was a life member and past Post Commander of the Aswell L. Picou VFW Post No. 9608, a life member of the Kenneth C. Boudreaux American Legion Post No. 380, the Holy Name Society, a 3rd degree life member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5013, a 4th degree Knights of the Father Patrick Curren Society, a life member of Ward 7 Citizens Club and a life member of the Chauvin Senior Citizens Club. For many years he worked at both the VFW and American Legion bingo games until his health no longer allowed. He loved watching baseball and football, playing cards, cooking and most of all, being with family and friends. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chauvin.
