Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cut Off, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Randy Pitre and wife, Charlotte, and Troy G. Pitre and wife, Rozanna; three brothers, Edward, Eddie and Mark Pitre; two sisters, Edith Pitre and Hazel Redmond; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Merita Guidry Pitre; his parents, Mark and Judith Lafort Pitre; and one grandson, Ronnie J. Pitre. After he graduated in 1956 from St. Frances de Sales High School, he worked for Standard Tile and Concrete and later transferred to Terrebonne Lumber and Concrete Co. where he managed the concrete division. In 1982, he became one of the partner-owners of Terrebonne Lumber, later Morrison Terrebonne Lumber Center and Terrebonne Concrete LLC. Until his stroke in 2000, he was an avid fisherman, hunter and sometimes golfer who loved to spend time with his fellow sportsmen. Shortly after the Dularge Fire Co. was formed he served as assistant fire chief. He was also a former president of the Houma Golf Club. He will be remembered for his affection and love for his wife, children, grandchildren and family and for the great example he set of faith, patience, acceptance and courage during the six years of his painful illness. Mr. deGravelles was born Dec. 17, 1928 in Franklin, into one of the most recognized sugar families in Louisiana. He joined his father in a farming partnership that was eventually incorporated as Tech Planting. During this time, he was active in the St. Mary Parish Farm Bureau and was on the board of directors of St. Mary Sugar Co-op. In 1976 he was chosen King Sucrose XXXV of the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival, and in 1979 Progressive Farmer Magazine selected him as Man of the Year in Service to Louisiana Agriculture. In 1993, he received from the Dwyer Memorial the coveted "Sugar Man of the Year for 1992." He was more than just a sugar cane farmer; he was very active in the American Sugar Cane League, chairing many committees during his tenure as a member of the Board of Directors. In 1977 he was elected the 29th president of the American Sugar Cane League and from 1988 to 1993 served as general manager of the League. In 1976 he served as president of the Louisiana Division of the American Society of Sugar Technologists. He was selected to serve as chairman of the National Legislative Committee. He was also a distinguished leader for the sugar industry in Washington, DC for many years. In 2006, for his outstanding and dedicated service to the Louisiana sugar industry Mr. deGravelles received the President's Award for the American Sugar Cane League. He served as director of the First Commercial Bank of Franklin, which is now Capitol One Bank, on the advisory council with the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta and as a member of the Business Advisory Council to the Board of Governor's of the Federal Reserve System. He was active in strengthening support for LSU, organizing and serving as the first president of the Louisiana State University Parents Club. He also organized and served as chairman of the task force that created the LSU Agricultural Leadership Program. Upon his retirement, Mr. deGravelles and his wife relocated to Lafayette where once again his knowledge, leadership and compassion guided him to serve their new community. He served on the board of directors of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, International Trade Development Group of LeCentre International DeLafayette, University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation Board, Board of Trustees of the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority, the Shadows on the Teche and the Acadiana Arts Council Board. He was also active in the American Diabetes Association. He served as board member of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, serving as chairman on the board in 2000. Until his stroke in 2000, he was an avid fisherman, hunter and sometimes golfer who loved to spend time with his fellow sportsmen. Shortly after the Dularge Fire Co. was formed he served as assistant fire chief. He was also a former president of the Houma Golf Club. He will be remembered for his affection and love for his wife, children, grandchildren and family and for the great example he set of faith, patience, acceptance and courage during the six years of his painful illness. She is survived by four sons, Milfred Chauvin and wife, Joyce, Horace Chauvin and companion, Sue Naquin, Richard Chauvin and wife, Linda, and Donald Chauvin and wife, Theresa, all of Chauvin; one daughter, Jeanie Chauvin and companion, James Authement; 11 grandchildren, Shelly and James Authement, Ross, Andy, Marty and Terri Broussard, Jessica Pellegrin, Rachel Hebert, Rebecca Price, Lacey LeBouef and Angel Fields; six step-grandchildren, James III, Tina and Jessica Authement, Rachel Naquin, Alvin Welch and Corey Porche; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Milfred Chauvin; her second husband, Valley Guillot; her parents, Clay and Carmelita Trahan Melancon; one daughter, Theresa Chauvin; two daughters-in-law, Rita Chauvin and Gale Porche; one brother, Jackson Melancon; one son-in-law, Vernon LeBouef; two sisters, Marie Melancon and Hazel Dubois; and one great-grandchild. She worked many jobs to support her family, including at a shrimp factory, as a waitress at Triple J. Restaurant, as a janitor at Lacache Middle School for many years and as a nurse's aid at Terrebonne General Medical Center for 10 years. She enjoyed being with people and will be remembered as a fun, loving and joyous person and will be sadly missed by family and friends. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
