He was 93. Roundtree, a Navy veteran, one-time trapper and retired oil company, was first elected to office in 1985 at age 71 when he became a Thibodaux city councilman. Five years later, voters elected him mayor. Roundtree, widely-known by the nickname he got in eighth grade because of the patches applied to his basketball shorts to keep them from sliding off his lanky body, was born Nov. 5, 1913, at Laurel Valley Plantation. He dropped out of school after the eighth grade when his father got sick Roundtree became a trapper in the swamps of Schriever and Chacahoula to help make ends meet, family members said. He worked as a welder in sugar mills across south Louisiana and on the USS Delatore dredge boat for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He served in the Navy during World War II and, upon his release in 1945, started a career in the oil-and-gas industry which would span the rest of his life. He was appointed constable for Lafourche Parish in the mid-1940s, his son Gwain Roundtree said, and in 1948, when Thibodaux was declared a city, was appointed its first marshal. Later, he would head the city's state-revenue office. Roundtree served a single term as mayor beginning in 1990. During his tenure, he paid special attention to the city's infrastructure and recreation programs, his son said, and was instrumental in bringing the annual living Christmas tree program to the Thibodaux Civic Center. His love for the city, his son said, was only equaled by his love of family, country, God and sports. Roundtree was an athlete, avid hunter, fisherman and naturalist and sports coach throughout his life, his family said. He was especially fond of bowling and, over a 60-year bowling career, captured a state championship title and was elected into the Thibodaux Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He also helped organize the Krewe of Cleophas and was a member of the Krewe of Chronos. "He was a fun-loving guy," Gwain Roundtree said of his father. "He loved life. He loved people. If he was talking to you, before he finished talking, he would know everything about you. ... He would keep going until he found somebody he knew (in common) and y'all would not be strangers anymore." Roundtree died Thursday at his Thibodaux home of complications from multiple myeloma, his son said. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow; it can be treated but there is no cure. He was diagnosed with the disease several years ago, but it had only begun to slow him down recently. He continued to bowl until four years ago and stopped driving a few months ago. Roundtree was accustomed to defying expectations. "If you ask anybody what they thought my dad's age was, it was always 10 to 20 years younger than what it actually was," his son said. Friends and family celebrated Roundtree's 93rd birthday with him at his home Sunday. "I think that was his finish line," Gwain Roundtree said. Roundtree is survived by his wife, Floyce, seven children, one brother, 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, four stepchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren. ========================== November 11. 2006 12:00AM Maybelle Songe Maybelle "Mitty" Dupre Songe, 65, a native of Houma and resident of Bourg, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006.
