During this time she met her husband, John "J.E.", where they made Lafayette their home. She taught at Cut Off High, St. Genevieve and Teurlings High School. She was very active in supporting her children's and grandchildren's schools and her church parish, St. Genevieve. Her life was dedicated to caring for her family, where she was a great role model for her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted Catholic and served as a member of the Catholic Daughters for 35 years. Our mother committed her life first to her family, then to her loyal and dear friends whom she cherished throughout her life. Throughout her life, our mother thrived in her community work in the nonprofit sector. She taught arts and crafts at St. Mary's Learning Center for Disabled Children for years and always held a special place in her heart for disabled children. Since 1993, she devoted her time to volunteering at the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic. She has been a founding member of the "Butterfly Ladies," a group of hard working, caring women who never stop working for the clinic's mission to provide health care for the working uninsured. Our mother would tirelessly collect fabric, design, stitch, sew and stuff butterfly pillows, year in and year out. She had a relentless dedication to the Butterfly Project and took great pride in creating beautiful pillows even throughout her treatment of cancer. In 1998, she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year. In the years thereafter, she was awarded the 2001 prestigious Women in Excellence Award, honoring women who have attained outstanding levels of achievement and whose contributions have made a significant impact upon lives of the citizens of Acadiana. In 2004, she was inducted into the United Way Volunteer Hall of Fame for work in her beloved butterfly project. She received the 2004 Louisiana Heroine Award of the Louisiana Philanthropy Initiative, which recognizes women for their dedication and generous contribution of time, talent and treasure. This award is given to women whose inspirational and extraordinary lives depict the efforts of Louisiana Women making a difference in their community. Next to her husband and family she loved nothing more than going to their camp at Toledo Bend where no one could match her passion for fishing. Her favorite place to be was in the quiet and peaceful surroundings of Toledo Bend, simply enjoying being with her children and grandchildren. She also treasured her evenings, filled with laughter and playing dominos with her dear friends.
