He was also a member of the Louisiana Police Jury Association Executive Committee representing Region 3. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the American Sugar Cane League, a charter member of the Assumption Parish Farm Bureau Board and a past president of the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists. He was also named the 1996 "Citizen of the Year" by the Assumption Parish Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the executive committee of the United Way of South Louisiana, a member and past president of the South Louisiana Economic Council, a member of the Louisiana Airport Authority, a member of the Assumption General Hospital Board, and a member and past king of the Donaldsonville Elks Lodge. He was appointed as a "non attorney" representative to the Committee on Professional Responsibility of the Assumption Bar Association. Cancienne was also awarded the "Guy Caire" Memorial Award in January 1987 by the Lower Delta Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a member of the Lake Verret Watershed Committee for 27 years, a founding member of the Belle Rose Hunting Club and an active parishioner of St. Jules/St. Martin Catholic Church. She was born Sept. 16, 1925, and resided with her parents on Verret Street in Houma, with her grandparents, Judge Hugh M. Wallis and Sylvia Briant Wallis. She attended Lawton Preparatory School until its closure and transferred to Terrebonne High. She attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and received a bachelor of science degree in home economics with a minor in art, studying under noted artist Conrad Albrecio. Years later she helped negotiate the contract with Albrecio for the mosaic mural once prominently displayed on the façade of Citizens' National Bank. The mosaic has since been relocated to its present home in the downstairs lobby of the Whitney Bank Building. After her graduation from LSU, she accepted a position with New Orleans Public Service and lived with the Edwin Miltenberger family on Third Street in the Garden District. In April 1951, she married Rudolph M. Williams and returned to Houma, where she developed the Broadmoor subdivision with her father and sisters. The family corporation donated the land and buildings for St. Bernadette and Broadmoor schools. A philanthropist and patron of the arts, Williams was a member of the National Council of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She was also a member of Amici, the regional district of the Metropolitan Opera which held auditions at Tulane University. He will be cremated and his ashes will be interred in his family crypt in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans. The date is pending. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Dosse and husband, Robert, of Houma, and Jeannie Fuller and husband, John, of Denver; three grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph Place Smith and Warren Jackson Smith. He inherited his love of life and outgoing personality from his mother; his love of music and reading from his father. During his life, which was full of enthusiasm and adventure, he enjoyed his family, travel and several different occupations. From 1930 to 1935 he worked on Standard Fruit Co. ships as a radio operator and purser. From 1935 to 1950 he was a flight radio operator, navigator and aviation pioneer for Pan American Airways. Between 1950 and 1958 he worked in marine maintenance and communications for Aramco (the Arabian-American Oil Co.) in Saudi Arabia. Beginning in 1958, he worked in telephone communications in New Orleans and Mandeville. He moved to Houma in 1998. Following his studies there, he earned degrees in philosophy and theology from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of New Orleans on Sept. 21, 1946. He served as associate pastor at St. Anthony Church in Baton Rouge, St. Joseph Church in Thibodaux, St. Joseph Church in Gretna, St. Eloi Church in Theriot, Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Westwego, St. Augustine Church in New Orleans and St. James Major Church in New Orleans. He assumed his first pastorate in 1959 at St. Anthony Church in Barataria where he served until his appointment as pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Violet in 1965. He was appointed founding pastor of St. Hilary Church in Mathews. On Jan. 2, 1965, he served under the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Houma- Thibodaux. Under his guidance he progressed to the point that the entire debt on the Parish Plant has been retired. His ingenuity and precedence in the development and growth of St. Hilary Parish is recognized by all. He has devoted his time and talent to creating a place of worship for years to come. The Council of Catholic Women was organized in 1965 and has remained active for the care of the altar, vestments and the church as a whole. The first president of the council was Doris Toups. The temporary church services in the newly constructed school cafeteria was held until the present new church was constructed and dedicated on Sept. 21, 1986. This was Daigle's completion of his legacy to St. Hilary and to the parish and all of its parishioners. His most satisfying legacy was to leave his parish debt free, which he accomplished. He retired from St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church on Oct. 1, 1993.
