He maintained a keen interest in local affairs, and in retirement, he served on the board of directors of The Bank. He was a member of the "greatest generation," and during World War II, he served as navigator with the 303rd Bombardment Group flying missions from Molesworth, England. On one of his missions, after his plane was crippled by anti-craft fire, he successfully navigated his B-17 Bomber to a crash landing in eastern Poland, with every crewman surviving. He enjoyed the annual reunions with his compatriots until the group was disbanded this year "due to the declining membership of actual 303rd BG veterans because of age and health issues." He always enjoyed the fellowship of humans and animals, and for years maintained a "menagerie" of birds (peacocks, guineas, turkeys and other strange-feathered friends). Recently, he kept backyard feeders well stocked and enjoyed watching his birds and keeping the squirrels at bay. As part of his legacy, he positively affected the lives of many young people as one of the founders in 1957 of the 4-H Club livestock auctions at the Coles County Fair. He was honored during the 50th anniversary of this tradition. He was a devoted member and supporter of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
