Mrs. Alexander was born July 31, 1921, in Shreveport. She was a member of the class of 1938 at C.E. Byrd High School, then graduated from Louisiana State University. While at LSU, she was a varsity cheerleader and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Mrs. Alexander and her husband, Herb, lived in New Orleans, Houma, Trinidad and Houston while he worked for Texaco, Alexander Petroleum Consultants and as an independent oil operator for Herbert R. Alexander Inc. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church Vestry, the Ellendale Country Club, and the Ellendale Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Mrs. Alexander was a 37-year breast cancer survivor. She was born in Frankfort, Ky., on Nov. 6, 1938, and lived in Lexington, Ky., for most of her school years. She attended the University of Kentucky, where she studied music education, and the Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, graduating in 1961. She settled in Thibodaux in 1966, where she became involved in volunteer work in the community schools and worked in a pediatric clinic. There, she combined her two favorite loves, music and medicine, with her dear love and respect for children. She counted her blessings as grandchildren shared her life. "Captain Abbie" received the prestigious honor of holding the Shrimp Festival King crown from 1986 to 1989. During his time at home, Abbie enjoyed gardening and made it his full-time passion after retiring in 1995. He always shared his bounty with family and friends alike. Throughout his life, he loved to cook and entertain. It was his greatest joy in the last years of his life to gather his family together and feed them.
