Everyone who knew Clyde loved his unique sense of humor. He was a lover of nature and all things outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and walking outdoors without shoes and television. Saia Jr., 79, a native and resident of Houma who lived in New Orleans for 30 years, died at home at 1:05 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. At the age of 17, Mr. Saia opened the Saia freight terminal in Lafayette with his brothers following the end of World War II. At the time, the terminal was the largest outside of New Orleans. After Mr. Saia served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he and his brothers continued to expand Saia Motor Freight, opening terminals throughout Louisiana and in adjacent states. The company grew into a major freight line in the southeast during the 1980s. Mr. Saia was a member of the American Trucking Association for many years. When Mr. Saia moved back to Houma in 1985, he convinced his brothers to move the company's general office to the city, which was then in the midst of an economic downturn. The move increased the size of the local terminal from 40 to 350 employees in a short time span. Mr. Saia was passionate about his family, his church and Saia Motor Freight. He was devoted to his family, gave generously to St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Houma as well as to other charitable causes. He also showed great concern for his employees and established a foundation to help needy children. He will be remembered as a loving, charming and handsome man and a man of faith. He will be greatly missed. He was a prominent figure in the furthering of the arts in Thibodaux and surrounding communities. His love of teaching and his love of and pride in his students was second only to his love of and pride in his family. She was a Sister of Mount Carmel, a retired teacher and was in the 69th year of her religious profession. She entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1936, and received the habit of the Sisters of Mount Carmel in 1937. In 1939 she made her first profession and pronounced perpetual vows in 1942. Sister Marie de Lourdes graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School in New Orleans in 1935 and received her teacher's certificate in 1939. She graduated from Incarnate Word University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a minor in French. She received a Master of Arts degree in English from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., in 1955. Sister Marie de Lourdes devoted 40 years to education. She taught at Mount Carmel schools in Abbeville, Lafayette and Paincourtville at St. Dominic, St. James Major and Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, at Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell, Our Lady of the Lake in Mandeville and at St. Joseph in Rayne. She worked in the Newman Center where she was private secretary to Msgr. Alexander Sigur at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1966-1967. In 1978, she left teaching and spent the next 17 years home visiting in St. Dominic Parish and in St. Clement of Rome Parish as receptionist, home and hospital visitation, librarian and Eucharistic minister. She retired to the Motherhouse in 1995, became a resident of Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in 1999 until Hurricane Katrina when she moved to the Golden Age of Welsh in Welsh. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Eastridge Nursing Home in Abbeville. Sister served as principal of St. Dominic and St. James Major in New Orleans, St. Joseph in Rayne and St. Elizabeth's in Paincourtville. She also served as Congregation directress of novices and junior professed. She taught English to the seminarians at St. Joseph Seminary in Benedict. In 1995 she served as director of speech language pathology for Assumption General Hospital where she provided consultation, diagnostic and intervention services for the medical/surgical unit, the behavioral unit, the outpatient clinic and the hospitals home health agency. During 1995 she also worked for Terrebonne General Medical Center where she provided speech language services for acute-care patients specializing in the assessment and treatment of patients with left/right cerebral vascular injury and cognitive communication impairments. From July 1997 to December 2003 she worked for the Assumption Parish School Board as coordinator/supervisor of speech language pathology services for the parish. She was a member of the Pupil Appraisal Team specializing in hearing impairment, where she coordinated assistive technology services and coordinated speech language pathology medicaid for the parish school system. In 2004 she became employed by Rehab Care Group Inc. in Thibodaux where she again was able to display her skill as a speech therapist working hands on with patients and their families. It was at this point in her career that she became proficient at modified barium swallow studies. From 2005 to January 2007 she did PRN work for Rehab Care Group at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center (rehabilitation, acute and outpatient services). She also provided many families gratification through her work with the Louisiana Early Steps program for Region 3 covering Assumption, St. James and Lafourche parishes. From Jan. 2006 to July 2007 she established Assumption Speech Language Pathology in Paincourtville where she provided speech services. It was during this time she earned certification as a provider of Speak Easy and stuttering systems in Greenville, N.C. Her skill and talent as a speech pathologist were surpassed only by the dedication and passion she gave her patients. She will be desperately missed by all she touched. Her unending passion was horticulture and she will be forever remembered for her creativity as a decorator.
