She was the only child of the late Eugene and Rose Lassalle of New Orleans. She graduated magna cum laude from the Loyola Music School in 1943, and was a gifted pianist. While attending Loyola she was president of Phi Beta, treasurer of the sophomore and junior classes and a member of the Glee Club, Band, Thespians and Pan-Hellenic Council. She was also a member of the Third Order of Mount Carmel. While her husband, Dr. Daunis, served in the Pacific during World War II, she took on several music students whom she always remembered and spoke of often to her children. She was particularly fond of the music of Chopin and also enjoyed reading historical novels. Before early onset of macular degenerative disease took away her close vision, she was an avid bridge player and also loved to play Liverpool Rummy, known by the family as "virus". Her travels took her to every continent except Antarctica, and she was known for her colorful recollections of the numerous trips she and her husband enjoyed together. Her most loved travel destinations were the American West and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which she never tired of visiting. Momma valued education and worked diligently to help her children through high school and college. She took a sincere interest in the careers and families of all of her children, and offered encouragement and guidance to each. Above all, Momma was a peacemaker. Coats; two daughters, Kelli Thompson and husband, Jimmy, of Alvin, Texas, and Karen Velupillai and husband, Laksham, of Baton Rouge; two sons, Paul R. Coats and wife, Peggy, of Patterson, and R. Morris Coats and wife, Lisa, of Thibodaux; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. He was a retired CRNA (nurse anesthetist) and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He received a Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He survived three months in the Buchenwald concentration camp and five months in Stalag Luft 3 prisoner of war camp in Germany. He loved his God, his family and his country. He was a Masonic Lodge member for 60 years. He graduated from the University of Michigan in anesthesia and loved fishing and woodworking. He also loved visiting with family and friends and never knew a stranger. He wrote poetry. Special thanks to Mary Ambeau (My Mary), his caregiver in his last months. He loved much and was much loved.
