Amanda Mae "Rose" Baber, 91, a native of Giddings, Texas, and resident of 

Houma, died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to funeral time Tuesday at Grace Lutheran 
Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial in St. 
Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.

She is survived by one son, Ray Baber Jr.; three daughters, Donna Parr, Roseann
Underdonk and Tina LeBlanc; 14 siblings; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her former husbands, B.A. Ditto and Ray Baber Sr.;
her parents, Earnest and Martha Mitschke; and one son, Dan Ditto Sr.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was a member of the Eastern
Star and Wednesday Bridge Club.

Harry Thomas Boudreaux, 76, a native of Raceland and resident of Houma, died at 

12:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.

Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home, with burial 
in St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.

He is survived by three sons, Spencer Boudreaux of Scott, Steve Boudreaux of
Welsh and Ryan Boudreaux of Larose; two daughters, Shelia Hanks of Welsh and
Gina Danos of Cut Off; one brother, J.C. Boudreaux of Houma; two sisters, Verna
Levron of Bayou Blue and Ida Mae Bergeron of Houma; 10 grandchildren; seven
step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex Boudreaux Sr. and Amy LeJune
Boudreaux; three brothers, Alex Boudreaux Jr., Harris Boudreaux and George
Boudreaux; and one sister, Velma Bonvillian.

He was a retired driller with Diamond M. for 21 years.

Christopher Matthew Burgess Jr., infant, a native and resident of Lafayette, 
died at Lafayette General Medical Center, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008.

Elaine Carter of Napoleonville; one brother, Michael Cargo of New Orleans; two

mother and father-in-law, Betty and Don Trotter; his brother-in-law and sisters-
in-law, Tim McElroy and wife, Teryl Trotter McElroy, Donna Trotter Fagan and 
husband, Jay Fagan, and Ruth Carlos of Houma; and his loving pet Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph Carlos and Felma Bourg
Carlos; one brother, Randolph "Randy" Carlos Jr.; one sister, Barbara C. 
Whitney; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Whitney and Ernest Pellegrin.

He was in business development with Baker Energy.

Bert was first a loving Dad to his children and a devoted husband to Karla. 
Beyond his love for his family, Bert loved cooking for his extended family and 
will be remembered for his joy of fishing and his passion for football.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran.

He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales. In lieu of flowers, donations can

He is survived by his wife, Mary Halley Mahler of Houma; his first wife, 
Lucindia Marie Leeder; one son, Al Mahler and wife, Lee Mahler, of Houma; two 
daughters, Susan Oncale and husband, Dennis, and Nancy Davis and husband, Doug, 
of Houma; six grandchildren, Monique Wright, Michelle Verret, Natalie Guidry, 
Nikki Guidry, Mark Guidry Jr. and Whitney Mahler; and numerous great-
grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Hilda Arceneaux Mahler; his 
parents, Alidore Mahler and Henrietta Chaisson Mahler; one daughter, Jennifer 
Mahler Deligans; and one brother, Butley Mahler Sr.

He was a retired furrier with Mahler Inc. and was a professional bowler.
He graduated from McCalla Military School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and attended
Tulane University and Spencer Business College in New Orleans.

He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Burma China India 
Theatre.

He was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

George, of Plaquemine, Leslie Malone of Lafayette, Alexis Guidry and husband, 
Greg, of Covington, Bonnie Brasseaux and husband, Bob, of Houston, and Stella 
Hebert Allemond of Abbeville; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Leigh Pool; her father, Alcee
Joseph Martin; one sister, Mildred Ruth Hall; and one brother, Charles Berkley
Martin.

She was assistant director of nursing at Abbeville General with more than 48 
years of nursing experience. She was a graduate of Southern Baptist School of 
Nursing in New Orleans.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was totally
devoted to her faith, her family and her friends, all of which meant the world 
to her.

He was a retired geophycist and geologist with Seismac Experts Group Inc. He 
received a bachelor of science degree with the University of Alabama. He was a 
U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and was a member of the Rotary Club and 
the Petroleum Club. He was very involved in the oil industry and with his 
church.

His hobbies were collecting old cars, hunting and renovating old houses. He was 
known to his grandchildren as "Big Daddy". He was a great father, grandfather 
and husband to his wife of 65 years whom he loved dearly. He was a very sociable 
man who was well liked by all who worked with him. He will be greatly missed by 
all.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Fazzio Verdin; four daughters, Donna Verdin; 
Gail Duthu, and husband, Chris; Karen Billiot, and husband, John; and Deana 
Aycock of Houma; one brother, Roy P. Verdin, and wife, Marlene, of Dulac; two 
sisters, Rita Verdin of Dulac and Dorothy "Sue" Billiot of Lafayette; his former 
sons-in-law, Harold Verret and Louis Aycock; 12 grandchildren; Christy, Kenny, 
Nick, Dugan, Keith, Jeff, Jenna, Angele, Chumpy, Alesha, Kim and Ciara; and 11 
great-grandchildren, Tristan, Kyler, Emily, Paige, Chrislyn, Johnathan, Ayiana', 
Bryson, Khiya, Jeffry and Liam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul E. Verdin and Stella Lodrigue
Verdin; and one brother, Wilbert Verdin.

He was a retired fisherman. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Nora Bourgeois Acosta, 87, a native and resident of Lockport, died at 4:30 a.m.
Monday, Aug. 18, 2008.

Betty Bloch

Betty Barton Bloch, a native of Tulsa, Okla., and a longtime resident of 
Metairie, died at Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexander, Monday, 
Aug. 18, 2008.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of St. James Episcopal
Church.

She is survived by her mother, Phyllis Bloch; one sister, Ann Robichaux of
Perrysburg, Ohio; two brothers, Ray and Dan Bloch of Alexandria; and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raphael Tim Bloch.

She was a graduate of Bolton High School and received her bachelor of arts 
degree in education at Northwestern State University and her master's degree 
from the University of New Orleans. She was a dedicated and exacting teacher of 
English in the St. Charles Parish School for more than 33 years. Her bright 
spirit will be greatly missed by her family and host of friends. She was 
particularly fond of Heifer International.

The family would like to thank the staff of Christus St. Francis Cabrini 
Hospital for the comfort and care they provided.

Virginia Robinett Smith, 67, a native of Beaumont, Texas, resided in counties in
Mississippi, parishes in Louisiana, but the majority of her life she has spent 
in Houma, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to funeral time 
Friday at First Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the 
church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband and lifelong companion of 48 years, Clarence
Smith Jr.; three sons, Carey Paul, Craig Patrick and wife, Anessa, and Chad 
Phillip and wife, Gina; three grandsons, Cullen A., Donavan P. and Hayden P. 
Smith; one step-grandson, Justin Lirette; her loving mother, Margaret A. 
Robinett; and many cherished relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ardis R. Robinett, retired from Humble 
Oil, Exxon Oil and numerous other oilfield related companies, after retirement, 
he worked as an oilfield consultant.

Virginia is a graduate of the class of 1958 at Terrebonne High School and 
attended Francis T. Nicholls College for two years.

During her life she was employed by Exxon in Morgan City, served as secretary at
First Baptist Church during three Pastoral tenures, worked at Sears for five 
years then went into the oilfield services working at Teledyne Merle Services, 
Otis Engineering and Halliburton Services. Upon retiring from oilfield service 
she continued to work for Tillery Enterprises Inc. Bookkeeping Services. Her 
personal interests were church services, church ministries and support groups. 
She was one of the original founders of Shoulders to Lean On Inc., a support 
group for families and friends of prisoners. She was the initial leader in 
having Bible studies for children in the Terrebonne Juvenile Justice Complex.

Special thanks to Dr. McGraw and the special staff of the Cancer Care Clinic in
Houma; Terrebonne General Hospital and its staff; and family and friends, who
visited, brought meals or said prayers.
