He was a retired restaurant owner and a member of Bayou Blue Methodist Church. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army's 7th Armored Division during World War II. He joined the Army in November, 1941, and was serving in Europe on Christmas Day, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge when his unit was given a turkey. A French family agreed to cook the turkey, which Matherne arranged because he could speak French, talking to the frightened family in their cellar. They told him the turkey would be ready at noon, but before the soldiers could eat, the Germans began shelling their position and dog-fighting aircraft shot at each other overhead. It was the next day before anyone remembered the turkey. Matherne returned to Houma in August of 1945 and worked for Texaco for 18 years before going into the restaurant business. He retired five years ago. On August 15, 1944, she was sworn into the U.S. Navy in the middle of World War II. She spent two years in the Navy Waves (Women Accepted Volunteer Emergency Service). During that time she served on five Navy War Ships and earned the rank of Seamen 1st Class. When the war was over she fell in love and married a Navy man by the name of Ruffin Prevost Jr., son of Ruffin Prevost Sr. and Lois Ellender Prevost. Shortly there after she was blessed with two lovely daughters and one granddaughter whom she raised from the age of two years old and loved her as her very own. Lillian was a wonderful loving woman and everyone who knew her liked her. She was involved in catholic charities, the Ladies Altar Society, the Veterans Association and the U.S. Navy League. She was a very active member in her community and was always willing to lend a hand. She is loved by all and will be missed ever so much. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Larose, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Louella Thomassie Vuillemont; one daughter, Cindy Shaner; one half-sister, Caroline Blanchard; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gladys D'Avy Vuillemont. He was an unrecognized veteran of the Korean Conflict and was Catholic.
