Lucien Simpson, M.D., 86, passed away at St. Anne General Hospital Thursday, April 2, with his family at his side. Dr. Simpson is survived by his wife, Essie Bascle Simpson; his children and their spouses, William L. (Bill) and Kay H. Simpson, A. Bruce and Patty G. Simpson, Lynn (Bitsy) and Danny Muhs, T. Justin and Maria M. Simpson, E. Gregory and Camile G. Simpson; brother, R. Dr. Simpson served the Lockport and Bayou Lafourche communities through his medical practice from 1949 through his retirement in 1996 as well as his continued service on the Board of Directors of St. Anne General Hospital until his death. Through the years, he also served his communities through various civic and medical organizations, including the Lion's Club, the Lockport Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion, the Louisiana Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Lafourche Parish Medical Society and the New Orleans Area Bayou-River Health Systems Agency Inc. He was the last surviving founder of St. Anne General Hospital. He also served his country as a medical officer in the U.S. Army for two tours of duty. He was a man of kindness and wisdom who instilled serenity in all he served. Dr. Simpson was most proud of his family and community service. One of his final thoughts was his joy of serving this community and the love that the community bestowed upon him. Dr. Simpson considered himself blessed to have lived such a full and wonderful life. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of St. Anne General Hospital for their loving care of Dr. Simpson and their support of his family and friends. After he returned home, he worked for Thomson Machinery Company from 1946 to 1962, WHC Inc, Mazarac Shipyard and McDermott Inc. from 1962 to 1963, and Cameco Industries from 1964 to 1982. After his retirement he stayed active with a commercial fishing venture and specialty tool fabrication. From 1986 to 2006, he dedicated his life to caring for his ailing wife until her death. He was a member of the VFW Thibodaux Memorial Post 5097. He was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Thibodaux. Vicky is Rita's closest and dearest friend and has selflessly given of herself as a caregiver to Rita during her illness over the last 20 years. She played a primary role in the history of integration of Terrebonne Parish Schools, being the first Native American woman to attend and graduate from previously all- white South Terrebonne High School in 1965. Howard and Rita were also active in the fight for Native American civil rights, helping to organize the Houma Alliance in the mid-seventies.
